Small dropdown on Malrin, finally feels like March

Capt. Tracy Ehrenberg

Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

MARCH 12th to 18th, 2009
Overall Catch Success Rate 95%
BILLFISH: Well this week we definitely feel it is March, even though the blustery winds and whitecaps have disappeared the fishing has ticked over into March status, which means a slowdown on marlin. This is not to say that the marlin are not here, they are and in good numbers but getting them to take bait is an issue. There is a lot of bait and they are on the surface, on the bottom, jumping you name it, but not overly interested in taking what is offered by anglers and with water a couple of degrees cooler, this is also a factor. Some of the captains say that it is breeding time, but there are no studies to back this up, just what the locals think. Some boats were able to entice more than the average amount of marlin to take their bait, such as "Andale" who released seven marlin for Brian Kaminski from Brookfield, Wisconsin on March 15th. A couple of days before March, 13th was not unlucky for "Rebecca" and "Tracy Ann", who released five marlin each for a group from Dallas, Texas. "Falcon" closed out the week, also with five fro Cassie Bunch and Zach Ellis, from Alice, Texas. Otherwise catches tended to be of one or two marlin per boat, with a dorado or shark here and there. Weights on the marlin are between 110 and 160 lbs. Seventy four percent of charters caught marlin, giving us a total catch of 106 stripers of which all but 5 were released.
OTHER SPECIES: Nineteen percent of charters caught dorado this week in the 18 to 30 lb class, with catches seldom more than one fish. The most abundant fish for sheer numbers this week was the humble sierra, or Spanish mackerel, ideal for kids to get their first taste of fishing, or a lot of fun on spinning tackle or a fly rod, these toothy, but tasty fish kept inshore anglers busy with catches of up to 30 plus fish per boat, for those concentrating on these. We had several mako sharks again this week, most juveniles released but there was a very nice 120 lb'er caught aboard "Cabolero" on March 17th by Bob Mineo from New Orleans. Tuna catches were very slow, but they are on their way….we heard of some very large yellowfin out towards the islands and it should not be long before schools of football size tuna show up here. We also had some yellowtail, bonitas and a couple or pargo.
LOCATION: Golden Gate, El Faro Viejo, Pedregalito.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Partly cloudy, now clear, seas were choppy during windy days, now calm.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 68-70 F
BEST LURES: Live bait.
