Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

PISCES FISH REPORT
September 24th to 30th, 2009
Overall Catch Success Rate 100%
BILLFISH: This week was the first time in months that we saw an increase on anglers and it worked out nicely because we also saw an increase on fish. Although billfish numbers were not that high, there were plenty of other fish, some bigger than billfish, to take up the slack. Anglers were busy pretty much all day, catching and releasing sailfish and marlin and also loading up on dorado and some huge tuna. The catches were mixed bags, giving the best of both worlds, feisty billfish released and great table fish boated. One morning this week we were greeted by surprise thunder and rain storm that lasted about an hour. The sea got a bit choppy on the Cortez side and our every jittery Port Captain closed the port; but our boats had already left and continued to fish, not being aware of the Port Captain's instruction and this turned out to be the best day of the week for catches. This day September 25th "Tracy Ann" released two striped marlin and a sailfish for Dan Rhodes from Cedar Falk, Iowa fishing with brother Brad from Minnesota and Steve Lawless from Waterloo, Iowa, all on live Caballito off of the Old Lighthouse. On the 30th, "Tracy Ann" was again our top boat, this time for releasing two striped marlin, boating a 45 lb wahoo plus six dorados between 20 and 25 lbs for Stuart Greenside, Liam, Dylan and Laurence Chapman, Tony Lennon, Nicole Murray all from a long way off…..Wellington, New Zealand. This same day Clarence & Tasha Greene from Salisbury, Maryland, released two striped marlin and caught seven dorado (six released) aboard "Rebecca" at Pozo de Cota and the Old Lighthouse. "Tracy Ann" was on a roll this week….on the 28th they released a sailfish and went on to boat three tuna, the largest being 180 lbs for Ken Scheffler and friends from Seattle, Washington. To round out the notable catches, was "Cabolero" on the 24th, with a sailfish and six tuna, the largest 130 lb, 14 miles off of the Old Lighthouse, for Chris Guerrero from Plano, Texas. Just twenty nine percent of vessels caught billfish this week consisting of ten striped marlin and eight sailfish.
OTHER SPECIES: Top story on non-billfish was a huge 254 lb yellowfin tuna aboard "Great Escape Jr", taken on a guacayama lure 25 miles south of Cabo by Dominik Green from Chicago…no small feat to land a fish of that size under the hot September sun. This was not the only big tuna as mentioned above we had several over 100 lbs including a 110 lb'er on "La Brisa" for Sergio Cortez (apt name) from Guadalajara, Mexico. The tuna catches were good thirty five percent of charters catching from one to ten fish, with the weights significantly higher, with plenty in the 50 to 90 lb class as well as smaller school size fish of 20 to 25 lbs. Actually though, the number one catch in Cabo this week was dorado with sixty four percent of boats catching anywhere from one to fifteen, with the average weight around 20 lbs and the largest 45 lb also on "La Brisa". The dorado took live bait as well as green colored lures from the Old Lighthouse to the Golden Gate. What was also a very nice surprise this week were the wahoo with almost twenty percent of boats catching these and for the first time in awhile we are seeing some larger fish, with a 60 lb'er caught on "Rebecca" by Paul Paulson from Gary Indiana. The other wahoo caught ranged from 20 to 40 lbs with the petrolero lure being the most effective for this species.
LOCATION: Pacific, Old Lighthouse to Golden Gate. The big tuna were caught 13 to 25 miles south of Cabo.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Hot, with a tropical depression to the west of us and what is no tropical storm Olaf, we felt the heat and humidity this week and had a couple of thunderstorms, overall seas were calm except for one day when it stormed a little.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 85 F
BEST LURES: Live caballito, cedar plugs, guacamayas, petroleros.
