Great Fishing for Tuna, Dorado, Sails and Marlin at Cabo

Capt. Tracy Ehrenberg
August 30, 2008
Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

AUGUST 21st to 27th, 2008

Overall Catch Success Rate 92%

BILLFISH: This week we had a lot of activity on the fishing front, no not necessarily on billfish. Half of the boats that we sent out caught striped marlin or sailfish, but nearly every boat caught dorado or tuna as well as the odd billfish. The port was closed on Sunday due to Tropical Storm Julio, which passed close to Cabo, causing rains and winds up to 35 mph for a brief period, but a far as storms go it was a lightweight, leaving no damage in Cabo. Towns further up the peninsula such as Mulege did not fare so well, as the river that flows through this location overflowed its banks. The port was closed for just one day and then reopened at 9.30 am, as anglers chomped at the bit to get going, into what were dead calm seas. There were several notable catches this week and it was like good old times. On August 22nd "Bill Collector" had a great day for Frank and Lonnie Gialketis from Huntington Beach, Ca. fishing just off of Los Arcos, they released three striped marlin, two sailfish and boated three dorado. Next day out "Ruthless" did well for anglers Pete and Mary Mondrick from Shoreham, New York fishing with Cal Allison from Seattle; they caught two striped marlin, one sailfish, one dorado and two yellowfin tuna with the sailfish and dorado on live bait, the striped marlin on a green lure and the tuna on a cedar plug, fishing at Golden Gate on the Pacific. "Bill Collector" also did very well this day with three striped marlin, a 150 lb pilot shark and four dorado for the Loubert's from Costa Mesa, fishing with the Rizika's from Manhattan Beach, CA. They fished at Golden Gate and also off of Elias Calles. "La Brisa" ended the week with three striped marlin, seven tuna and one dorado for Chris Nazetta and Lori Beneshi from Maryville Florida, fishing at Golden Gate. "Valerie" was at the same location and also released three striped marlin, four tuna and six dorado (these anglers must have been tired), for John Peacock, Everett Foreman, Chris Fryer and Richard Dunn, all from the state of Georgia. So to summarize a really good week with plenty of action, though there were a very few boats that got skunked. Pisces anglers caught a total of 26 striped marlin and 5 sailfish all released.
OTHER SPECIES: Dorado was actually the number one fish in Cabo this week with seventy two percent of charters catching fish in the 20 to 30 lb class. Catches ranged from one to six fish per boat being found on the Pacific. They took a combination of live bait and lures. Yellowfin tuna catches were also good with sixty four percent of charters hooking up to fish in the 20 to 40 lb class. However, when found anglers tended to catch more per boat than dorado, with catches ranging from one to eleven fish. "Rebecca" was the exception, finding fish up to 80 lbs fishing at the 95 spot on the Cortez side for Michelle Ward and David Stebbins from Dakota and Cody Ward from San Diego.
LOCATION: Pacific mostly Golden Gate, Elias Calles, Los Arcos, Old Lighthouse.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Rain on Saturday and Sunday, then turned beautiful, with clear skies and calm seas. The rain did bring air temps down somewhat.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 84 F
BEST LURES: Bait was scarce at the beginning of this period, but now available and good for sailfish, striped marlin took green lures and live bait, dorado, lure and dead bait, tuna cedar plugs.
