Great week for tuna

Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

PISCES FISH REPORT
July 10th to 15th, 2009

Overall Catch Success Rate 81%
BILLFISH: Not the best week for billfish and the consensus is that the true summer heat has not begun, hence the slower fishing. We think we are on the verge of a heatwave then get cooler weather on the Pacific with greener water. Captains reported seeing up to five marlin in a day, but they simply did not seem hungry most of the time. They tried enticing them with both mackerel and caballito, but they appeared full and would not always bite. One great catch this week though, was that of Larry Cohen from Bevely Hills, Ca, who released a blue marlin, close to 200 lbs after it took a "pétrolero" lure between the 95 and 11.50 spots. Larry's party then went on to catch ten yellowfin tuna, aboard "Spartacus". " Tracy Ann" went the complete opposite direction off of the Old Lighthouse on the Pacific, 13 miles offshore and managed to release a striped marlin tha took a live caballito and also boated six tuna for Jesse Baldwin from Albuquerque, New Mexico. The number of anglers dropped again this week, which means a drop in fish caught, nevertheless twenty nine percent of charters caught billfish, consisting of blue marlin, striped marlin and sailfish. Ryder Pratt from Houston caught a large sailfish (see photo) that he released aboard "Rebecca" as well as six tuna up to 30 lbs, at the 11.50 spot. Pisces anglers caught a total of three stripers, two sailfish and one blue marlin this week.
OTHER SPECIES: Well if the marlin weren't cooperating the tuna certainly were....they were out top catch this week with fifty seven percent of boats catching between one and sixteen in the 20 to 35 lb class. "Spartacus" was boat of the week, not just for the blue marlin they caught but also for eighteen tunas, caught on sardines at Destiladeres for Drew Hoffpauir and family from Houston, Texas. Those boats that could n't get sardines used cedar plugs which also worked well. The tuna were spread out in various locatios and pods of porpoise were an indicator of their presence. Some of the boats opted for inshore and did very well, the best we've seen in awhile, on roosterfish. "Tracy Ann" released a dozen on live bait, at La Playita in San Jose for Andy Smith and Gerald Knowles from London, England. Apart from the roosters there were just a few red snappers and jack crevalles. Not many dorado this week, in fact, just two for our fleet this week.
LOCATION: La Playita, 11.50 spot, Cabo Real, Herradura, 95 spot, Destliladeras, 13 miles Faro Viejo.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Mostly clear skies, seas calm to moderate, warm breeze from the Pacific.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 82 F
BEST LURES: Live bait for marlin and sailfish, sardines and cedar plugs for tuna.
