Hundreds of Marlin Off Cabo

Capt. Tracy Ehrenberg
October 11, 2008
Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

Overall Catch Success Rate 90%
BILLFISH: Wow, what a week…..Pisces anglers caught a total of 338 billfish, consisting of 333 striped marlin, 15 sailfish and 1 blue marlin. Most of the action was at Golden Gate were action was fast and furious for many boats. Top boat by far was 50ft "Bottom Line" with a group from New Zealand who fished four days. Anglers were Marteen Durent, Mike Herrick, Dave Persons, Graig and Grent Modill and Debe Kelly, for three days they fished the Golden Gate area and totaled 42 striped marlin, 5 sailfish and 4 dorado, with the highlight being October 5th, when they released 18 marlin and 2 sailfish. When they were tired of marlin fishing they tried their hand at tuna, where they also excelled four, with the largest being 140 lbs. "Eureka" also had two good days with 10 marlin per day plus a few dorado. Anglers were Justin Hunter and friends from Fort Worth, Texas. Art Hevener from Philadelphia did well to release 10 striped marlin and get 2 dorado aboard "Rebecca" on October 4th. The only blue marlin of the week was caught aboard "Tracy Ann" by Patrick and Jean Neville from Bradenton, Florida. The fish took a Petrolero lure outside the 95 spot on the Cortez side, the fish was released but was estimated at 250 lbs; they also released a sailfish and boated a dorado. There were many good days, like October 7th, when the average catch was six marlin, there were a few boats that did get "skunked" but this would be because they simply couldn't get a marlin to bite despite the sheer number, or they were trying for something else. These numbers are admirable anywhere in the world. Anglers were thrilled with their catches and it's a shame we are unable to mention everybody. Of the other 300 fish caught only two were boated with an average weight of 110 lbs. Eighty three percent of charters caught billfish.
OTHER SPECIES: Dorado catches remain good, but not outstanding. Fifty nine percent of boats caught between one and a maximum of eleven fish in the 15 to 40 lb class, giving us a total of 172 fish. Tuna catches were slower at twelve percent, though we are seeing bigger fish, in the 20 to 80 lb class and of course the largest of the week the 140 lbs on Bottom Line as mentioned above. We had one 60 lb wahoo aboard "Eureka" on October 9th, plus one mako shark aboard "La Brisa".
LOCATIOIN: Overwhelmingly Golden Gate, a few boats went to Finger Banks, 95 spot.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Beautiful, calm seas, partly cloudy skies. Hurricane Norbert is off our coast right now, but so far it has been the biggest non hurricane we have seen. We have not had a drop of rain; there is barely a breeze and no huge wave action. In fact despite the port being closed as a precaution on October 10th, boats could easily have fished.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 86 F
BEST LURES: Live mackerel, green colored lures.
