Pisces Fish Report
April 8th to 15th, 2011
Overall Catch Success Rate 77.42 % for All Species Combined
BILLFISH: Marlin catches were steady this week with twenty three percent of our boats releasing fish in the 120 to 160 lb class. Some anglers still didn't fancy these odds and opted to remain inshore to try for smaller eating fish. Anglers who tried for marlin usually saw them and we had cases of fish actually mouthing baits before turning away with disinterest. One of the best days was on the 10th for Rod and Elliot Beckstrom from Palo Alto, CA when they did extremely well to release three striped marlin aboard "Tracy Ann". The fish were found twenty eight miles from the 11:50 spot and took a combination of lures and live caballito. "Adriana" had a triple marlin day on the 15th for Jason Rasberry from Raton Rouge, LA who fished alone and ended up with an enviable day, not only catching his first marlin but an additional two to boot; all were taken at the 11:50 spot The same day, Chris Reger from San Antonio, TX released one striper aboard "Andrea" at the 95 spot; this fish took ballyhoo. "Bill Collector" released another one for our friend and client Matt Rainwater from Forth Worth, TX, these guys went a little further to Destiladeras. On the 10th David Soretsky and friends from Alberta, Canada released one striper which approximately weighted 140 lbs aboard "Andrea" Our anglers had a total of fifteen striped marlin – all released except one. As you can see there was no one spot for marlin; they were found at different locations and when found were not always hungry. However we are hearing reports of multiple marlin days further up into the Sea of Cortez, so it's just a question of time before they start moving this way.
OTHER SPECIES: Yellow tail was the top catch this week almost on a par with marlin catches, with twenty six percent of our boats catching this delicious fish. One of the best days was on the 11th for Ross Kline & his son Derek with friends Moses Wood and Ryan Hurst – a group of 11 years old; captain Rey Winkler and Salvador kept they busy reeling in a total of ten yellow tail most a good size in the 30 lb class, plus twenty sierras & twenty white bonitas – they released most of them and just kept five yellow tails and half of the sierras. They were caught at sixteen miles from Migriño on the Pacific side and they used hoochis. On the 14th Paul Pittman and Julie Levenson from Woodside, Ca had three nice 30 lb yellow tail aboard "Andrea" at Las Margaritas, yoyos and hoochis worked for them. Sierra and bonita action was good with sixteen percent of our boats catching this small but tasty fish. Karrie Dunks and Cory Crommette from Encinitas, CA had a mix of fish with twelve 15 lbs white bonitas and five sierras between 8- 10 lbs aboard "Attitude Adjustment"; they went to the pacific side at Margaritas.
"Cabolero" was out on April 15th bottom fishing and they had a good day with sixteen rock fish, two sea bass and one yellow tail; the fish took a mix of yoyos and hoochis twelve miles from the Old Lighthouse.
As to other species, we had jack crevalle, sea bass, rock fish, skip jacks and many white bonitas.
