60lbs Hammerhead released, great dorado catches

Capt. Tracy Ehrenberg
June 25, 2009
Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

June 11th through June 17th, 2009

Overall Catch Success Rate 87%

BILLFISH: Despite higher water temperatures this week, fishing is still not as consistent as we would like it to be. Nevertheless thirty three percent of charters were able to catch striped marlin and we also had one sailfish too. Fishing locatins switched back and forth between Destiladeras up past Punta Gorda on the Cortez and just few miles or so off shore on the Pacific, just beyond the arch of Cabo. "C Rod" was the top marlin boat this week with three released, plus two 20 lb tuna boated, for Deb & Tom Williams, fishing with Doug & Charles Reeves from San Antonio, Texas. They fished just four miles off of Land's End with the marlin caught on live bait (caballito) & the tuna on blue and white lures. Another boat that did well was "La Brisa" with two marlin per day on the 11th and 12th of June for a group from Louisana, consisting of Steve Trosclair, Charlotte Myers, Dwayne Melancon & Harris Allemond. Their second day out they also caught a doardo on a a dead bait, which was a little over 30 lbs and a yellowfin tuna on a red & black lure. " Spartacus" was one of the few boats to catch more than one marlin....they headed out on the morning of the 16th, up the coast to Destiladeras, where they managed to pick up a good size dorado, at 44 lbs on a flying fishlure, but the marlin bite was slow. They headed back toward Cabo and gave it a try late in the day, managing to release two striped marlin off of Cabeza de Ballena for Mike Sebour, from Earth, Minnesota. Other catches this week were a mix of one marlin, plus a dorado or two with a smattering of tuna. Pisces anglers caught a total of 18 striped marlin this week & 1 sailfish, with all but the sail released.

OTHER SPECIES: Dorado was actually the most plentiful sportfish in the waters off of Cabo this week, which is great, as they are great eating and are currently of a good size with fish over 40 lbs not uncommon. Dorado of the week, was caught aboard "Adriana" on June 17th by Derek Smedley from Mucknall, England, weighing in at just under 60 lbs, he also released a striped marlin. Fifty six percent of charters caught doardo this week ranging in size from 20 to 45 lbs – catches were of between one and five fish. Tuna catches were the best they have been in a while, with thirty six percent of boats catching between one and three fish, in the 18 to 25 lb class. We released one 60 lb hammerhead and inshore there were good catches of roosterfish; one panga we sent released ten. Just one 40 lb wahoo, this week, aboard "Tracy Ann", plus some nice yellowtail catches, sierra, red snapper and a couple of jack crevalle.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Some baking hot days, with calm seas, but wind has picked up on the Pacific again producing whitecaps....Cortez side is much calmer.

LOCATION: Between two and twelve miles off of Lands End, Destiladeras, Punta Gorda, 95 Spot, Chileno.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 73 F

BEST LURES: Live caballito, green, petrolero, pink/blue, red/black, white/blue.
