Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

Overall Catch Success Rate 100%
BILLFISH: This week anglers met with more success on dorado and tuna than on marlin, but then again, most anglers preferred to go for what was more of a sure catch and wanted to take fish home with them and we were happy to oblige. As most people know we were threatened by Hurricane Jimena this week and as reported on our blog Monday, the category four storm was moving directly towards us. Fortunately the hurricane moved slightly offshore, passing within 100 miles of us and saving us from its full force. The same cannot be said for the rest of the state though, as the storm made landfall at Magdalena Bay on the Pacific side, crossed the peninsula and hit the Cortez side at Mulege and Santa Rosalia. The towns in that area were devastated and are still without power and water, with 70-80% homes damaged, mostly with roofs blown off. Here in Cabo the port was closed for two days and re-opened to calm seas and clear skies on Thursday. It was amazing that the 12 foot waves had disappeared and it was hard to believe a category four hurricane had been in the area. The only kind of marlin we had in Cabo this week were striped and boats found the odd one here and there amongst the tuna and dorado. Twenty three percent of boats caught marlin this week, though seldom more than one. Bryan Pike from Mansfield, Texas fishing with Kevin Needham aboard "Yahoo" did well to release two striped marlin and boat two dorado and seven yellowfin tuna on August 27th. This same day "Andrea" released a marlin and got two dorado and twelve tuna at the Jaime Bank, for William Blackwell from Valencia, California. Pisces dockmaster Oscar Baņaga, took him family fishing for the first time aboard "Valerie", they had a ball, releasing a striped marlin and catching twelve dorado and seven tuna, between Migriņo and Golden Gate. Pisces anglers caught a total of seven striped marlin this week.
OTHER SPECIES: Top Catch this week was yellowfin tuna for sheer numbers, though more separate boats got dorado. Sixty one percent of charters caught between one and twenty three tuna. Weights ranged from 15 to 120 lbs. On September 3rd "Bill Collector" caught the largest tuna of the week, for Tony and Steven Clement from Los Gatos and San Luis Obispo Ca. they actually totaled twenty tuna and two dorado; the smaller tuna were released. The fish took a blue and white lure at Cerros de Arena. Hiroshini Nakamara from Tokyo, Japan was thrilled to land a 100 lb tuna aboard "Tracy Ann" at the Golden Gate, also on a lure and then went on to catch an additional seven tuna from 20 to 30 lbs. The tally on tuna for Pisces this week was140. Dorado catches were at seventy six percent though when found catches ranged from one to twelve fish per boat. Weights ranged from 15 to 40 lbs with most fish found between Migriņo and Golden Gate. Just one wahoo this week, which was aboard "La Brisa" caught by Charles Butar from San Francisco, which weighed 40 lbs.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Great with the exception of Tuesday when we had 50 to 60 mph winds, huge waves and intermittent rain. Seas now calm and skies are clear.
LOCATION: Everything was on the Pacific from the Old Lighthouse to Golden Gate, with San Jaime the most productive.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 86 F
BEST LURES: Live bait for marlin, blue white combination lures for tuna and green colored lures for dorado.
