Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

Overall Catch Success Rate 100%
BILLFISH: This week was not the best for billfish, but we are still seeing action, besides, a lot of crews were opting for what was a guaranteed catch this week, on dorado or tuna and decided to wait it out on the marlin front. Nevertheless we did have some nice catches. This period started out with a celebrity catching his first marlin on his birthday; Alvin Joiner, better known as Xzibit the host of MTV's Pimp My Ride, as well as being a rapper, singer and actor, fished aboard "Salsa" 70 ft Hatteras, on September 19th. His fish was a striped marlin estimated at 140 lbs taken 6 miles from San Jaime on a live caballito. Next day out Bruce Schaffer from Atlanta fishing with Don Skover from Bentley, Michigan released a blue marlin, estimated just over 200 lbs, on a black and red lure, 6 miles from Los Arcos on the Pacific, aboard 28 ft "Andrea". One other notable catch was a 220 lb blue marlin taken on September 21st, also aboard "Andrea" 22 miles south of Cabo by Randall and Denise Wren from Oro Valley, Arizona; they also boated three tuna up to 40 lbs. The marlin took a red, green and orange lure, locally known as a "guacamayo", or parrot lure. This same day "La Brisa" fished the same area, but a little further at 25 miles and released two striped marlin and boated a 154 lb tuna…this was definitely the tuna boat his week, for Gabe Zalazar and Ryan Woodward. Thirty three percent of charters caught billfish this week consisting of 8 striped marlin, 1 sailfish and 2 blue marlin.
OTHER SPECIES: Yellowfin tuna was the number one catch in Cabo this week with sixty three percent to boats catching from one to ten in day. Our top angler was a lady, who showed amazing stamina in the heat as she battled a huge yellowfin tuna aboard "La Brisa" at the Jaime Bank. The three hour fight produced a 200 lb fish, weighing approximately twice that of angler Heather DeRamus from Richmond, Texas, after it took a black and green lure on 80 lb test. Second largest fish was that mentioned above, also aboard "La Brisa" at 145 lbs. Weights were as low as 15 lbs on the tuna but we had many in the 50 to 80 lb class too. Dorado catches played second fiddle to the tuna this week with fifty three percent of boats catching from one to five in a day. Weights were from 15 to 40 lbs, with the largest a 55 lb'er. Just one small wahoo this week at 28 lbs aboard "Rebecca". Not much for our anglers inshore as they were all up on the Pacific.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Very hot, seas calm.
LOCATION: Old Lighthouse to Golden Gate on the Pacific.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 86 F
BEST LURES: Live caballito, red/green; black/ green, orange combos.
