Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

Overall Catch Success Rate 100%
BILLFISH: Good news can never be boring and the news continues to be good, with lots of striped marlin still stacked up at the Golden Gate and incredible numbers of fish available most days. Live bait was in short supply some days which is when we saw lesser catches, otherwise boats caught anywhere from one to twenty marlin in a day. Top boat this week was "Yahoo" with twenty marlin caught and released on December 23rd for Tekina, Ray and Nikolas Sobesti, fishing with Dusting, Fellows, Kali Graham and Shelley Rustin, all from London, Ontario. "Bill Collector" one of our top producers had an excellent week, releasing seventeen marlin for Terry and Ray Drury from Cathedral City, California and twelve marlin and one sailfish for Mark Chiavetta from San Jose, California. The 24th was a very good day with several boats catching a dozen marlin; "El Gallo", "C Rod" and "Yahoo". Nearly every boat out this week had marlin, unless they really did not want them and preferred something smaller, giving us a catch success rate for billfish of 90%. Our anglers caught a total of 273 striped marlin of which all but 3 were released. Those brought in weighed from 120 to 160 lbs. We also released 3 sailfish.
OTHER SPECIES: Marlin could not be touched being the leading fish by far but dorado were the next most likely fish to be caught with catches of up to four fish for 36% of the boats. Sizes were average at 15 to 25 lbs. Most of the dorado were picked up en route to the Golden Gate or on the way back, around the Gaspareņo area. Tuna catches were slow with less than 10% of the boats even finding them, but then again, most charters were going for a more sure thing. A rare catch was a 160 lb thresher shark aboard "Adriana", by Kyle and Jennifer Gebhardt from Bellingham, Washington fishing with Paul Kuehne; they also released five marlin. One small hammerhead shark was released and inshore boats caught sierra, roosterfish up to 45 lbs, skipjacks and needlefish.
LOCATION: Golden Gate
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear sunny skies, calm seas.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 76 F
BEST LURES: Live bait.
