Marlin Frenzy Continues Despite Full Moon.

Capt. Tracy Ehrenberg
December 13, 2008
Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

Overall Catch Success Rate 100%
BILLFISH: Yet another fantastic week for marlin in Cabo even with an almost full moon. Ninety two percent of charters caught at least one marlin, whilst others were out to set personal records; such as Tony Vancooten & P. Vieogen from London, England, with an impressive thirty striped marlin released on December 9th, aboard "Bill Collector". Other outstanding catches were though of Johnny Mack Powers from Stone Wall Texas who's tally for this trip, was a stunning ninety two marlin released during his fishing aboard "Bill Collector" and "El Gallo"…..Johnny didn't catch all of these fish though, his 86 year old father helped him out on one of the days. Another angler we have to mention, not just for the number of fish he caught, but due to an unbelieving grandson, is Mick Meakin from Staffordshire, England; fishing with friends aboard "Rebecca" he managed to catch nineteen striped marlin and sixteen dorado during their visit. There were a couple of slower days when the average marlin catch per boat dropped as low as one, but then there were other days such as December 7th, when we had five boats that had ten marlin or more. The action continues at the Golden Gate with live bait the best way to get a hook up. Pisces anglers caught a total of 321 striped marlin this week of which all but four were released. Those brought in weighed from 120 to 160 lbs.
OTHER SPECIES: Marlin catches were by far superior to anything else, but dorado catches were not bad with one quarter of boats catching between one and sixteen in a day. They were found at Gaspareño and on the outer Golden Gate with lures and bait working. Tuna catches were much slower with just eleven percent of charters catching football size fish. When found up to nine were caught in a day. One 40 lb wahoo was caught aboard "Ruthless" by David Whitell from Calgary, Canada and a mako shark was released aboard "Rebecca" by Mike Tomlinson from Wildwood, New Jersey. Inshore we are starting to see more action on smaller game with pangas catching roosterfish, sierra, needlefish, red snapper and jack crevalle.
LOCATION: Golden Gate
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Some days partly cloudy, seas were moderately rough on two days.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 79 F
BEST LURES: Live bait.
