BILLFISH: Marlin mania has hit Cabo! Striped marlin are stacked up at the Golden Gate on the Pacific, reaching record numbers. Pisces anglers this week totaled an amazing 464 (four hundred and sixty four) billfish, consisting of 445 striped marlin, 16 sailfish and 3 blue marlin. Eighty two percent of charters caught marlin and the reason it wasn't one hundred percent is because boats were trying for something else. With these kinds of numbers, you can imagine that we had some amazing catches, with six to ten marlin per boat per day, not uncommon, so congratulations to both anglers and crews for their hard work. Not to take away from anybody's achievement, as there were many outstanding catches, but these were some of the ones that stood out; "Yahoo" on October 24th, released 20 striped marlin and caught two dorado for Marti Dickson, Sam Anderson, Chris Day and Marcus Payne, who are from different states in the U.S. This same day produced all of the blue marlin we had in the week, with two released aboard "Andale" estimated at 280 and 290 lbs, as well as a sailfish for Brian Grange from Vancouver, Canada and one other blue marlin, also for a Canadian from Prince George, Darren Jacobs, aboard "Eureka" , a fish just shy of 200 lbs. On October 27th, "Andale" released 18 striped marlin for Ron McCall from Baton Rouge, Louisiana and "C Rod" had 14 striped marlin this same day, with 13 released and one 120 lb fish boated for Robert & Susan Cam, Thomas McMurdo and Sam Shoemaker from Aurora, Colorado. Of the 464 billfish caught all but two were released.
OTHER SPECIES: Everything else seems to pale in comparison to the striped marlin fishing, but dorado catches were fairly brisk with fifty six percent of charters catching between one and eight, albeit small ones, seldom more than 20 lbs. Nobody was really going for tuna this week although we did have a few football size fish, but with the WON Tuna Tournament coming up next Thursday and Friday, boats will start to hunt for them to be ready. "Rebecca" was the only boat to get a wahoo, quite a decent size compared to what we have seen lately, at 60 lbs, caught by Henry Ahlbom from Finland. Inshore the pangas we sent out caught a few sierra, roosterfish and fair amounts of yellowtail between 7 and 10 lbs.
