Almost 400 marlin released this week in Cabo

Capt. Tracy Ehrenberg

Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

February 26th to March 4th, 2009
Overall Catch Success Rate 100%
BILLFISH: The marlin have really come back in numbers at Golden Gate, so much so that we totaled three hundred and ninety this week. Responsible for a huge part of this number was Matt Rainwater from Fort Worth, Texas. Matt is a professional photographer and loves to fish aboard "Bill Collector" with Julio and Esteban, Matt fished eight day and was bruised, cut and aching by the end tallying 188 striped marlin, 2 dorado, 2 tuna 1 sailfish and 1 mako shark – his only respite was his buddy Neal joining him for the last three days of the trip to help muscle in the fish – their top score was 40 stripers in one day. Other fantastic catches were for Mike Connolly from Cabo aboard "Falcon" with 28 marlin on March 4th. Tim Gudewill and Todd Towers from Vancouver released 20 on March 3rd. "Spartacus" had 30 marlin released, two dorado and one snapper on February 28th for Noel and Carol Briscoe from Clovis, California. This same day "C Rod" has 25 marlin and one mako shark for Dennis Epping and John Bushnell from Salem, Oregon. Ninety one percent of charters caught marlin this week. Catches ranged from one to twenty plus fish, on live bait, sardines and mackerel at Golden Gate – it has to be seen to be believed.
OTHER SPECIES: Dorado catches remain fair with thirty percent of charters catching one or two fish and more rarely up to four; most were incidental catches whilst fishing for marlin, but the couple of boat that went the San Jose way did better on these. Seventeen percent of boat caught small mako sharks ranging from 20 to 60 lbs. Sierra are starting to increase in number with catches of a dozen or more not unusual. The odd red snapper here and there.
LOCATION: Only one worth talking about, Golden Gate.
WEATHER CONDITIOINS: Daytime temps around 85 F, seas mostly calm, skies clear, some fog early in the day.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 73 F
BEST LURES: Live bait.

BASED ON THE CATCHES OF PISCES BY TRACY EHRENBERG

"Bill Collector did not have enough flags to signal truly how many fish they released this day, but Matt Rainwater from Fort Worth, had to lie down on the way home"
