Marlin Ring in the New Year in Cabo

Capt. Tracy Ehrenberg
January 8, 2009
Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

JANUARY 2nd to 7th, 2009
Overall Catch Success Rate 100%
BILLFISH: The New Year started off well with no slowdown on the marlin front, though the bait did become a bit harder to obtain. Weather and nature are magnificent right now, with beautiful sunrise and sunsets and whales, dolphins and sea lions galore whilst anglers fish for marlin. The number of marlin remains incredible with hundreds spotted per day. Angler numbers were off by twenty to thirty percent at the close of the year, probably due to the economy, which is a shame as Cabo is still so affordable to fish and you can't beat the weather right now. Boats headed up the Pacific to Golden Gate as a matter of routine, where out top boat this week "C Rod" released twenty three striped marlin in one day for John and Jim Carey from Saint Louis, Missouri. Marco Ehrenberg and Carlos Narro, out on "La Brisa" on January 3rd, released 14 striped marlin and lost another four as well as boating a dorado."Valerie" had a good week too with nine marlin for the Zifferblatt's from Miami, Florida on the January 3rd following up with eight the following day for this same family. Eighty nine percent of charters caught marlin this week with the average catch one to six in a day. Pisces anglers caught a total of 177 marlin this week; all released except one 110 lb fish.
OTHER SPECIES: Dorado catches trailed those of marlin at thirty nine percent, but this is still a good number for January. Boats caught between one and five between the Old Lighthouse and Golden Gate. We saw some sharks caught also at Golden Gate, with a 100 lb mako caught on "La Brisa" by Tony Holland from Minneapolis on January 6th, the biggest we have seen in years. One other mako was released as well as a hammerhead shark. Inshore roosterfish and sierra were caught.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Skies partly overcast with a few drops of rain on January 3rd (it always rains slightly right around New Year), now clear, seas calm.
LOCATION: Golden Gate
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 73 F
BEST LURES: Live bait.
