Overall Catch Success Rate 100%
BILLFISH: The amazing marlin catches at Golden Gate are starting to unravel a bit, just as expected, but we're not complaining. Every single boat we sent out this week caught fish of some sort (except for two boats that got sea-sick and asked to come back) with marlin still the number one catch with seventy six percent of our charters catching stripers ranging in size from 110 to 180 lbs. The best marlin action was still at the Golden Gate and we had good catches up until one day before full moon, then a slow down for a couple of days. We had some remarkable catches, such as twenty-one striped marlin released aboard 60 ft Hatteras "Spartacus" on Valentine's Day for Ernesto Martinez and friends from San Diego. They weren't the only San Diego residents to do well, Randy LaDue fishing with wife Janet and son Johnny released ten striped marlin and a mako shark as well as boating two dorado, all at Golden Gate on February 12th aboard "Bill Collector". Another notable catch was of twelve marlin released by Ken & Janet Mashinter, Paul & Debbie Schmeler from Ontario, Canada aboard "C Rod", also at Golden Gate this same day. Between these two days "Andale" was the top boat with eleven striped marlin released for Mark Goodwin, from Southlake, Texas. Other catches range from one to five marlin per boat. Pisces anglers caught a total of 131 striped marlin of which all but one were released.
OTHER SPECIES: We had lot of different fish caught this week, but following marlin, dorado was the most abundant sport fish, with forty eight percent of charters catching between one and twenty one fish in a day. The pattern is the same, some dorado caught on the Pacific but real numbers caught on the Cortez side in the Punta Gorda area; "Valerie" had twenty one dorado, all caught on live sardines for Glen and Kevin Cross and friends from Los Gatos, California on February 15th . "Andale " caught eleven in the same area the day before, as well as a nice 50 lb wahoo; the dorado took mackerel and the wahoo a yoyo. After dorado Mako shark was the most frequent catch with thirty two percent of boats catching small mako sharks seldom over 50 lbs, in the Golden Gate area. We also had one hammerhead released. Also making an appearance at Golden Gate were large squid weighing up to 40 lbs. Inshore boats caught roosterfish, sierra, skipjacks, jack crevalle, a few red snapper and pompano.
LOCATION: Golden Gate for marlin and shark, better dorado catches at Punta Gorda, others species inshore both in San Jose and in Cabo between Solmar and Gaspareņo.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Some days windy which produced some waves, other days dead calm, skies partly cloudy.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 72 F
BEST LURES: Live mackerel and sardines.
