One Hundred Percent Marlin at Cabo

Capt. Tracy Ehrenberg
January 16, 2009
Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

Overall Catch Success Rate 100%
BILLFISH: Well we keep watching the U.S news and see how many of you are suffering from freezing temperatures and here we are down in Cabo shivering if it gets as low as 65 F at night! Not only do we have great weather, we have spectacular fishing……everything single boat out this week caught at least one marlin and as many as eleven in one day. The sheer number of striped marlin continues to be impressive, especially at Golden Gate, with hundreds of marlin visible, some chasing sardines, others taking mackerel. Even with a full moon this week it didn't slow things down, the fish continued to bite. Top boat for us this week was "Yahoo" with eleven marlin released for P.W Stubbs and L Einspainer from Dallas, Texas on the 13th of January. A close second this week was "Bottom Line" with ten fish released for David Skoczen from Ridgefield, Ct, fishing with Jacques Quemer & Brad Rinderknecht from Houston. Our marlin catch success rate was one hundred percent and our anglers caught a total of 200 fish, of which all but four were released. Those boated ranged in size from 110 to 130 lbs. The number of anglers in town is definitely lower but there are plenty of fish to go round.
OTHER SPECIES: Marlin are the main item but there are still dorado around, but they will start to decline as we head into the slowest time of year for this species, namely January and February, nevertheless there were catches of fish between 18 and 25 lbs, though seldom more than one per boat and no more than 18% of vessels even found them. Sharks continue to make a comeback and once again this week we had a couple of threshers, a hammerhead and a mako. We heard of a big 180 lb thresher caught aboard "Retriever", the fish was extremely strong, probably because it was hooked with a circle hook and wasn't feeling much pain. Once boated it was found to be a pregnant female with almost fully developed embryos, two were almost full formed and were taken out of their sacs and began swimming around in the bait tank and were then put into the sea, hopefully to survive. Inshore it was roosters and sierras.
LOCATION: Golden Gate, Pacific, now some action at the Old Lighthouse too.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Dead calm seas, skies mostly sunny.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 72 F
BEST LURES: Live bait.
