One Hundred Percent Marlin Catch Rate in Cabo

Capt. Tracy Ehrenberg
December 20, 2008
Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

Overall Catch Success Rate 100%
BILLFISH: Cabo fishing continues to deliver the goods, with every single boat out this week catching marlin. Catches ranged from one to twelve fish in a day, giving us a catch rate of one hundred percent on billfish. There was also a stray sailfish caught aboard the panga "Sirrus", by James Larkin from Los Molinos, California. The 13th wasn't unlucky for "Bottom Line" and anglers Jim Bewley, Kyle Rutledge, Barrie Benson and Oscar Contreras who managed to release a dozen striped marlin and boat four dorado and one tuna….marlin were caught at Golden Gate and the smaller fish at Gaspareño. This same day the Largent boys from Riverside, California also did well to release ten striped marlin aboard "Valerie". A couple of days later "Valerie" was our top boat with seven striped marlin ranging in size from 120 to 160 lbs for another group from California. "La Brisa" and "Tracy Ann" had seven marlin each on the 17th as well as dorado and a hammerhead shark. The fishing continues to concentrate at Golden Gate on the Pacific, though we have heard comments that the fish aren't as hungry as before. The weather continues to be slightly warmer than normal for this time of year, which is probably why the whales have delayed their arrival. Pisces anglers caught a total of 160 striped marlin of which, all but three were released. Those brought in weighed from 130 to 170 lbs. Catches could have been much harder, but his is traditionally our slowest time of year for anglers.
OTHER SPECIES: It was pretty slow on smaller game this week….just thirteen dorado were caught which translates to nineteen percent of charters with success. Tuna were even more scarce with just a couple 20 lb'ers caught. We are starting to see some small sharks; we had a couple of makos 40 to 50 lbs and one hammerhead. Sharks have become a novel catch as their numbers have been decimated by commercial fishing, so we ask all anglers to release any shark they catch. Inshore just a few sierra and better numbers on roosterfish.
LOCATION: Golden Gate, Gaspareño, Old Lighthouse.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Partly cloudy, seas calm.
BEST LURES: Live bait.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 79 F
