"Fly Hooker" Fish Report

“FLY HOOKER” FISH REPORT FOR 19 MARCH 2001

Today is a birthday fishing trip for our good friend Sandy West, the manager of Viva Cabo Hotel in downtown Cabo San Lucas. Sandy, her sister Barbara and her mom “Mom” were at the boat and ready to go at 6 am. Being Monday and my day off Sandy had asked me to accompany them for the day. All Right! We grabbed 5 live Caballito from the bait pangas on the way out and cruised on up to Gordo Banks. Upon arriving there we were able to get 4 scoops of live Sardinas from a friend of Manuel’s. There were Tuna busting all over the place but we were having no luck, even after heavy chumming, changing to smaller hook sizes and sizing down in the size of line we were using. We tried dropping bait deep and had no luck there either. Finally we hooked up a nice Tuna and “Mom” got the chance to fight the fish. It had been a while since she had caught a fish but it was not long before she had the rhythm down. It did take a while but after about 20 minutes Juan was able to gaff a beautiful 25-30 pound fish. We all felt much better now that the “skunk” had been taken off the boat! Unfortunately it was the only fish for the day, we did have two other strikes but were not able to hook them up. Sandy was happy and the water and weather were beautiful, that made for a fine day on the water. Let’s hope the fishing improves soon! Until tomorrow, Tight Lines!

“FLY HOOKER” FISH REPORT FOR 20 MARCH 2001

Dave Reese is sharing the “Fly Hooker” today with John and Nancy Nickels. To make this a short report all I have to do is say that they went to Gordo Banks, saw lots of other boats catch fish, Dave pulled the live bait away from the only fish that showed an interest and they fished inshore on the way back. Nancy had a strike from what Juan said was a very nice Yellowtail of about 20 pounds as they passed by Punts Ballena. The strike was on a 9mm red/white Rapala and the fish headed for the rocks and broke off. That was the action for the day. Boy, it has to improve soon! We will let you know when it happens. Until then, Tight Lines!

“FLY HOOKER” FISH REPORT FOR 21 MARCH 2001

Mike Onderick booked the “Fly Hooker” for the day as a present for some of the guys from the “Wichita Collegiate High School” Class AAA Basketball team. State Champions in their class, the trip to Cabo was in Celebration of the winning season. Mike went fishing aboard the “Fly Hooker” last year with Dr. Jones during the Dr.’s Marlin hunt. We had Mike, two other adults and three of the players aboard the boat today. Juan and Manuel cruised north for 30 miles in order to get into the Tuna, past Gordo Banks. They were able to pick up several fish in the 35-pound range in the area and lost a few others. When the bite died down they headed over to Gordo Banks where they proceeded to catch and lose a few more. All of these fish were caught on live Sardinas. Everyone was able to fight at least one Yellowfin and several large fish were lost. Three of four fish hooked up by casting live Sardinas to boils were broken off. That may have been due in part to the fact that the line on the spinning reel used to cast them was only 20-pound test and the hook was tied directly to the line, using no leader. It may have been due to an old reel and just in case that was the problem I have ordered two new Baitrunners. The total for the day was 5 Yellowfin in the boat and 5 others lost. The ones caught were all in the 20-35 pound range and several of the ones lost would have beaten the 50-pound mark according to Juan. Everyone had a good time on the water and we would like to congratulate the players on their win, both on the court and on the water! Until next time, “Tight Lines” from Mary, George, Juan and Manuel, the “Fly Hooker” crew.

FLY HOOKER FISH REPORT FOR 22 MARCH 2001

Brett Hemmerling booked the “Fly Hooker” for today and has brought his girlfriend Jody, her sister Kendra and Mom Jean along. Brett was really interested in doing some fly fishing, but because the fishing has been slow I advised him the chances of catching something would be better using conventional tackle, Since catching was definitely on the agenda he left the long rod at home for this trip. Jun and Manuel headed the “Fly Hooker” to Gordo Banks once again because while occasionally slow, it has been consistent. They spent 2 ½ hours fishing the Inner Gordo using Sardinas and Brett got to fight and boat a Yellowfin tuna of about 25 lbs. Juan and Brett said there were two other strikes that did not hook-up. Juan said the red crab were so thick that balls of them could be seen on the surface. Due to the slow action they decided to troll back to Cabo and hope they could find something during the trip. No schools were found and no Marlin were spotted, but Brett was the greedy angler when a 12 lb Dorado struck. He was able to get it to the boat in short order with the women giving him cheers in the background. Juan filleted the fish and they had Dorado and Tuna to take for dinner. Thanks, Brett and good luck! Until next time, Tight Lines from Mary, George, Juan and Manuel, the “Fly Hooker” Crew.

FLY HOOKER FISH REPORT FOR 23 MRCH 2001

Mike Onderick is a return client on the “Fly Hooker”. The last item they were able to catch lots of tune and that is the request for the day. This is the reward for good work for a few high school juniors here on spring Break. Juan and Manuel go for the Gordo Banks once again knowing that every day is different. The action this day is much better than yesterday and in 3 hours of fishing, they are able to boat 5 Yellowfin tuna between 15 and 25 lbs. They lost 2 others, but none of the fish were large ones. They trolled back from the banks after hearing of some boats finding and hooking Striped Marlin. They had no luck with the fish on the return trip, but they did see whales and a turtle. Maybe next time they’ll get the long nose. Everybody got to fight at least one fish and all were happy and will be back next year. Until next trip. Tight lines for Mary, George, Juan and Manuel, the “Fly Hooker” Crew.

Cabo San Lucas Fish Report

CABO SAN LUCAS FISH REPORT FOR MARCH 19-25, 2001

Fly Hooker Sportfishing

WEATHER: This past week has been an example of why people love to come to Cabo. The weather has warmed up, we have had sunshine everyday and the temperatures ranged form the low 70’s to high 80’s. No cloud cover and very light winds contribute to the feeling of living in Paradise.

WATER: conditions have been perfect for fishing this past week. Light winds have kept the chop down and the Pacific side has had only a small 3” swell. Glassy conditions in the morning, change to wind riffled surfaces midday and a light chop by late afternoon. Water temperatures are starting to go up with the Pacific side of the cape being in the high 60’s and the sea of Cortez up to 73 degree. A long finger of cool weather has extended south of the cape, but it is beginning to warm up also. We have a warm water current eddy approaching from the southeast that should raise the temperatures overall in the region and hopefully bring in more fish.

BAIT: A mix of Caballito and Mackerel have been available all week at the usual price of $2.00 USD per bait. Sardinas in Cabo San Lucas have been about $20. per scoop, but if purchased in San Jose they have been about $5-10 a scoop.

FISHING

BILLFISH: Thanks goodness the Striped Marlin bite is beginning to pick up. Everyone is attributing this to the increase in water temperature and decrease in bait abundance. It is also possible the improved water conditions have made it easier to spot tailing fish. Whatever the reason, there have been more Marlin reported this week than for the last 3 weeks combined. Almost all of these fish have been caught on live bait.

YELLOWFIN TUNA: Consistency has been the hallmark of Yellowfin tuna fishing at Gordo Banks. But while consistent, there have not been large amount s caught. Most boats have been getting 1-5 fish per trip and sizes running 15-35 lbs with the occasional 60-75 lb fish for excitement. Boats able to happenchance on the porpoise have done well with quantities of 10-20 pound footballs and an occasional 50-70 pounder. These fish have been falling for cedar plugs and feather jigs. The porpoise have been from 15-30 miles to the southeast of the cape.

DORADO: A few scattered fish have been found and most of them have been 12-15 pounds. Feather jigs and live bait have been working well when the fish are found. Most have been found mixed in with the tuna offshore.

WAHOO: I saw an 80 pound fish yesterday that was caught while working porpoise for tuna, but was the only Wahoo I have seen all week. There are some out there !!!

INSHORE: The water is warming up a bit so the yellowtail bite that was going on at the Arches has fallen off almost as soon as it started to get good. The bite was good on the tide change for fishing the 15-25 lb class and most of them were caught on iron jigged in the mid-depths of 75-125 feet. Skipjack action has been red-hot for fish in the 10-15 lb range and a few Sierra have rounded out the active inshore bite. The Pargo that wee supplying occasional hot action have moved to deeper water for the most part, as the moon has changed phase.

NOTE: The whales are starting to move out, the water is warming up and the fishing should start to turn on soon. It’s still spring Break and there are a lot of kids in town. Doesn’t seem to be as many rowdy’s as last year though, of course as a fisherman, I am usually in bed by 9.

Until Next time, Tight Lines,

Capt. George Landrum
