Fly Hooker Daily Catch Report
“Fly Hooker” Daily Report for June 11, 2001
John Holtman, his son Adam and Adam’s girlfriend Quinn were today’s anglers on the “Fly Hooker” They are scheduled to go again on the 13th. They would really like to catch Marlin, so Juan and Manuel head out past Gordo Banks to the area that has been holding the fish for the past few days. It is a two-hour run before they are there and the water is still green, but at least it is warm! They spotted 20-30 Marlin during the trip and both Juan and Manuel too turns tossing the live bait to the tailing fish. Finally |John asked Juan if he could give it a try and a frustrated Juan said sure. John tossed the tired bait in front of one of the pair they were working and he got a slight backlash. As he picked the last of it out, the line kept coming off the reel! Yep it was a fish! Joan told him when to lock the drag and set the hook and John was into a fight that lasted 75 minutes. He ended up with a very nice fish of about 140 lbs at the side of the boat for pictures and the release certificate will look nice on the wall! Congratulations John, sorry about the blisters, but they should heal quickly and maybe the wind will die down by Wednesday. Until then, Tight lines!
“Fly Hooker” Daily Report for June 13th 2001
Today was the second day for John and Adam Holtman, but Quinn decided to spend the day ashore. I guess she was not feeling well Monday on the return trip in the rough water and thought better of it. Too bad, because she missed some good early morning action. Juan and Manuel again headed East-southeast, but only had to go 22 miles today before they began spotting fish. I was told that they might have seen as many as 40 marlin today and before noon they had each tagged and released one! But this time they fought the fish smarter and didn’t come back with more blisters. Excellent job guys! Congratulations on being involved in the Tag and Release program. We were happy to have you fishing on the “Fly Hooker” and look forward to seeing you again next year! Until then, Tight lines!

Our good friend Rick Harris decided he needed a break from work and brought the family to Cabo. The family stayed ashore today, but he brought his friend Chris. Marlin was the target and the saw 20+, but no hungry ones. They did have short hook-ups to 2 Dorado that Juan said were easily over 50 lbs each, but they both came off. Sorry guys, but perhaps next time the luck will be with you. (And Rick you are on vacation, loose the cell phone already!) Until nest time, Tight Lines!

Phil Orr is our Webmaster and we were delighted to take him and a few friends fishing today. Altogether it was Phil, Lawrence, Scott, Sandi, Richard and myself, (yep, I got to go!) Phil, Sandi and I have been fishing a long time, so for us it was nice just to be on the water, but we really wanted Lawrence, Scott and Richard to catch fish. First on the list was Lawrence and after cruising 18 miles we began spotting Marlin. Out went the lures and about 10 minutes later Lawrence was hooked up to a beautiful 40-50 lb bull Dorado. He brought it to the boat where it proceeded to give Juan and myself a bad time frying to gaff it. We finally managed and you should be able to see the fish on our picture page as soon as Phil has a chance to post it. The next fish was for Scott and this time it was a Striped Marlin that ate a live caballito run down 30 feet of planer. 25 minutes later, after a lot of coaching and good-natured ribbing, Scott was looking at releasing his first Marlin. Revived along the side of the boat and sporting a new piece of orange jewelry in a Billfish Tag he was released to fight again another day. We saw many more fish in the very green water and had several that paid a lot of attention, but none that ate a bait. One fish came in on the slow-trolled squid spreader bar and every one got to see it light up as if ready to attack, but we managed to keep the bar out of range. Another fish picked up and ran off with a surface bait four times, but once again, did not seem terribly interested. The wind on the trip never did start blowing and we ended up having an excellent day on the water. Even Richard had a great time while waiting and did not seem to be disappointed, just enjoyed the trip and a calm day on the water. Thanks Guys, until next time, Tight Lines!
“Fly Hooker” Fish Report for June 16th, 2001
Dave Middleton and his sons Mike and Josh were our anglers today. They are in Cabo on a big family vacation, but were the only ones in the group who wanted to fish. I guess mike’s beautiful wife Jessica decided the pool was more her style for the day! David has been fishing before, but I believe it was a first for Josh; at least this type of fishing and Mike is really looking forward to it also. Thank goodness the weather has changed and the water today was just about perfect. Since the wind died, the warm water has gotten closer and today it was only about 14 miles to where the fish were. Once Juan and Manuel got the ”Fly Hooker” to the area, there were fish all over the place. They said they must have seen 40+ fish and almost 20 of them free jumping, but the water was still green,. They found one hungry Striped Marlin and Josh got to be the angler on the fish. It took about 45 minutes for him to fight the fish and bring it to the boat for a tag and pictures. The fish estimated to be about 130 lbs swam off after a few pictures. The only other action on trip came from a Dorado that grabbed a live bait tossed to a Marlin. That fish was not hooked for long, but all in all everyone had a great time! Thanks, guys and we will see you again next trip to Cabo. Until then Tight lines!
“Fly Hooker” Fish Report for June 17th, 2001
Father of the day Rod took his daughters Karen and Kim and granddaughter Vanessa out for a little fishing action today. Being as it is Father’s Day and you do what Dad wants to do! Well Rod only wanted to go out for a half day, because he was afraid the girls would get bored. The plan was to go for Roosterfish, so everyone could catch something, even though Rod really wanted Marlin. Well things seldom go as planned and on the way out of the Marina Juan heard on the radio that the Marlin had moved in closer as close as 3 miles out as it turned out. Never mind the Roosterfish! Less than 10 minutes later they were hooked up to their first Marlin and since it was Father’s Day Rod fought this one all by himself. He did an excellent job on the lively Striped Marlin and since he really wanted the girls to feel the pull of the a big fish, he insisted they reel in the next one! It was a team effort, but the next marlin was released to fight again. By this time everyone was pretty tired out so when the 3rd Marlin was hooked up on a trolling lure only 10 minutes later, the fish was able to get free due to slack in the line and tired arms. 1 tagged and 1 released and the other fought pretty well, accomplished everything and more that Rod had hoped for. Thanks folks, it was nice to make a dream come true and you all got to fight your first Marlin. Until next time, Time Lines

WEATHER: Thank goodness that the nice weather has finally shown up (knock on wood). The week started just as they all have started for the past several months, lots of westerly wind and the resulting dust and choppy green water. On Thursday night the wind disappeared and on Friday, Saturday and today we had almost perfect early summer conditions. Today we actually had a slight easterly breeze for the morning and early afternoon. The temperature has been in the 90’s during the daytime and since the wind died off the evenings have been in the low 80’s. There has been no rain this week and for the most part the skies have been cloud free during the day. Looks like it may be time to clean the screens on the air conditioner!
WATER: Wow, this has been a very strange week as far as both the water temperatures and the water clarity are concerned. First the temperature. The Pacific side near shore has remained in the low to mid sixties all week but the temperature has been in the low 70’s once you get out over 40 miles. The Sea of Cortez has been almost a mirror image with the water temperatures being a few degrees higher on average. At least that was the situation at the beginning of the week. As the week progressed the warmer water drew both closer to shore and towards us, most likely a result of the wind stopping. Second was the water clarity. All week the water had been green and warm. There were reports of blue water out 70+ miles, but for the normal charter range, green water has been a fact of life. Fortunately that situation is beginning to change also since the wind died. We are getting reports of blue water as near as 20 miles out in the last few days.
BAIT: Plenty of Caballito at the usually $2.00 per bait and I have seen no Mackerel. Some of the Pangas are offering Mullet and I have no reports of Sardinas this past week from the Cabo boats.
FISHING
BILLFISH: Good news on the Striped Marlin. Early in the week the boats had to travel as far as 35 miles to the East-Southeast to find the fish. They were thick once you found them, but not biting well. Since the wind died they have followed the warm water and today they were being found just outside the Cape, as close as 2 miles. The water is very off green in color and there are squid everywhere, so the bite is not as good as it should be, but when you are seeing 30-40 marlin a trip, there are bound to be a few hungry ones! We are nearing a new moon on the 20th and as we get closer the bite seems to be improving. Almost all of the fish have been taken on live bait, either tossed to tailing fish or slow-trolled around the concentrations of squid.
YELLOWFIN TUNA: Nada, Sorry about that. I sure hope the Tuna Fisheries recovers soon!!!
DORADO: We are beginning to see some good consistent action now, and the fish are very nice sized, most of them have been over 30 lbs with a few in the 50 plus range. Marlin lures and slow-trolled live baits have been working to bring in an average of one per boat. A few boats have been getting multiple Dorado almost every day.
WAHOO: As we are nearing the new moon, just not there.
NEARSHORE: Lots of Striped Marlin being spotted this week, most boats seeing between 25 and 40 a day. 100 lb leader and #7 live bait hooks seem to help in getting strikes and we have had luck slow trolling behind a planer at 30 ft and a downrigger at 60 feet. A vertical and horizontal spread of live bait covers all the conditions. Keep you fingers crossed for improvement in the tuna bite!
Until Next Week, Tight Lines!!!
