“FLY HOOKER” FISH REPORT FOR OCTOBER 16, 2001
Gene Sink is in Cabo on his Honeymoon with his new wife Deana. They are really
wonderful people and Mary and I wish them the best! Unfortunately the fishing gods
were not smiling on them this trip but Gene is a fisherman so is used to that happening
now and then. The water was nice for the trip but the only action was from a Striped
Marlin that got hooked up for about 5 seconds. They got to see it jump but that was it.
I’m sorry that there wasn’t more fishing activity on this trip and hope for everyone’s
sake it gets better soon!
“FLY HOOKER” FISH REPORT FOR 17 OCTOBER, 2001
Darwin (Bucko) Ferris and his brother have the “Fly Hooker” booked for today and
tomorrow. Both their wives are with them today and Juan and Manuel decided to try
the Pacific side and target Dorado. Well, one out of three was the result. Juan said
that the water was still pretty green up the coast and that the debris that had been
holding fish has pretty much disappeared. The Dorado they did catch was nice sized
and gave them plenty of fillets for dinner. We will keep our fingers crossed that the
action is better tomorrow!
“FLY HOOKER” FISH REPORT FOR 18 OCTOBER, 2001
The second day of fishing for the Ferris brothers was a lot more productive as Juan
and Manuel were able to find a pod of porpoise that had Yellowfin Tuna associated with
them. The first three passes resulted in hookups on fish that weighed in the 15 pound
range. The fourth pass was the good one! A strike from a Yellowfin in the 60 pound
class kept the boat still for about 40 minutes before Juan was able to stick it with a gaff!
Great fillets! Mary and I are so glad that there was finally some action!
“FLY HOOKER” FISH REPORT FOR OCTOBER 19, 2001
Today’s trip was supposed to be for our friends and returning clients Larry and Pat
Ware. Pat came down with the flue or something so Larry had to go by himself! I
asked him what he was going to do if there were multiple hookups and he said that
Juan and Manuel would have to go into action as anglers then! Well, he managed to
do it himself as they found Yellowfin today. There were no big ones like yesterday but
there were a dozen fish in the box that weighed between 10 and 20 pounds each! Not
a lot else went on during the trip but Larry is going to go again tomorrow on another
boat and hope for boat so we wish him luck.
“FLY HOOKER” FISH REPORT FOR 20 AND 21 OCTOBER, 2001
Returning friends and clients Tim and Jill Lawrence are back in Cabo on their
anniversary. Last year they were here on their Honeymoon, escaping the cold
weather up in Anchorage. If my records reflect correctly they caught and
released 7 striped marlin and caught lots of Dorado and Tuna during the four
days of fishing the first week of December. Both of them were really looking
forward to more action like that but perhaps it will happen on the 23rd or 27th
because it sure didn’t happen these two days. On the 20th they had two Striped
Marlin that they tried to bait but got no hookup. On the 21st I went with them
and could not do much better. We did have one Striped Marlin grab the lure on
the bridge rod and take about 50 yards of line and not hookup. That was at 9:15
on the Pacific side. Later we worked towards the 95 spot and I spotted a big
swirl in the water. After turning to it and pulling the lures through the area we
got a strike on the short rigger from a nice Blue Marlin and again it failed to
hookup, this time after pulling about 60 yards of line off the reel. All right, two
more days to go and things have to get better!
Until then, Tight Lines from George, Mary, Juan and Manuel, the “Fly Hooker” Crew!

CABO SAN LUCAS FISH REPORT FOR OCTOBER 15-21, 2001
WEATHER: The usual sunny skies all week long with daytime highs in the mid to high
80’s and dropping to the high 70’s at night. No rainfall this week. Dark at night. (A
Kind Of Magic)
WATER: There has been a band of warm water wrapping around the cape all week.
Ranging from 10 to 20 miles in width and in the 83 to 85 degree range it has extended
up the Pacific side as far as 40 miles. It has started on the Sea of Cortez up just south
of Gordo banks. The outer edge of the band is up against cooler water running about 3
to 5 degrees less. The water is getting much bluer and is almost back to normal. With
the light winds all week the surface conditions have been great with slight swells and
very light chop. Because of it’s inherent nature, the water has remained wet and salty
all week long. (Bohemian Rhapsody)
BAIT: The normal price of $2 each for Caballito, very few Mackerel have been
available from the bait Pangas. This price has been for live baits. (Under Pressure)
FISHING:
BILLFISH: I sure hope the Blues show up soon! There were a few caught this week
but most of the Marlin action was on Stripers. The action was spread all over the place
but most of it was right out front. The Los Cabos tournament big Blue was 350 pounds
and the big stripey was 202 pounds. The Marlin have been striking on lures but now
that the tournaments are here a lot more are being caught on slow trolled live bait than
before. Some of the favorite spots this week were the 95 spot, the 1150 and Gordo
Banks. The Skipjack being used have been easily caught in Cabo Bay and off of the
Solmar beach. (I Want It All)
YELLOWFIN TUNA: The tournament winner was 134 pounds and second place was
126 so there were some nice fish caught. All of these were associated with porpoise.
A lot of football tuna were found, both with the porpoise and not. Cabrillo Seamount,
Gordo Banks and San Jaime pumped out some nice fish also. Big fish on live bait slow
trolled deep! (One Year Of Love)
DORADO: Tournament winner was 60 pounds but there were lots of fish in the 10-20
pound class. The bite has dropped off a little as the debris from the hurricane leaves
the area. Most boats are still able to find enough Dorado to make the anglers happy
and most of the fish have been on the Pacific side. (One Vision)
WAHOO: Very few Wahoo this week and the sizes were not large. Tournament winner
was only 45 pounds. (Who Wants To Live Forever)
INSHORE: Some small Roosterfish are being caught but most of the attention is on the
Yellowfin and Dorado. Most of the action has taken place up the coast on the Sea of
Cortez, off of the Westin and south to Chileno. (The Show Must Go On)
NOTES: The Los Cabos Fishing Tournament sponsored by the Hotel Association saw
a good increase in the number of boats entered compared to last year. Last year there
were 36 entries and this year there were over 50. The same will not be able to be said
of the Bisbee the way it appears now. Last year there were 236 entries but so far this
year there have been just over 140. Economic conditions up north may have
something to do with it but some of it may also be due to the legal conflicts for the past
two years winners. Hopefully it will go smoothly this year. (Written to the music of
“Queen” on the great compilation album “Classic Queen”, Hollywood Records, 1992.
Crank it up for a lift in the morning!)
