CABO SAN LUCAS FISH REPORT FOR DECEMBER 17-23, 2001
WEATHER: It warmed up a bit from last weeks conditions. We are seeing daytime temps in
the mid 70’s to low 80’s and the evenings have been in the mid 60’s. Pretty much a clear sky
week and the winds have been southerly most of the time but very light. (Deck The Halls)
WATER: Pretty much everything in range of the charter boats has been in the 76-77 degree
range. About 40 miles to the south-east of the cape there has been an intrusion of warmer water
that reaches the low 80’s. Water on the Sea of Cortes up towards San Jose has been a slight bit
off color but the Pacific side has been good and clear. Surface conditions have been good most of
the week with it getting just a bit choppy in the afternoon on occasion. (Angles We Have Heard
On High/High On Hope)
BAIT: Mostly Mackerel right now at $2 per bait and there have been plenty of Sardinas
available, most of them at $20 a scoop. (Poets + Angels)
FISHING:
BILLFISH: Not a great week for most of the boats on the billfish. They are out there but it has
been a matter of the right place at the right time. Golden Gate Banks seems to be the most
productive area again with some boats able to catch and release as many as 5 Striped Marlin per
trip, and other boats next to them getting lucky with hooking up one. Very few Blue Marlin or
Black Marlin this week as the water temperatures are cooling off. Most of the Striped Marlin
caught were tailing fish that fell for tossed live Mackerel. Little Drummer Boy/Luna Negra Beat)
YELLOWFIN TUNA: The are out in front of the Arches was putting out some Tuna in the 10-15
pound class for most of the week but the bite was slow. The same report came to me from the
Gordo Banks area. An occasional larger fish was hooked up but there was no consistency to the
action. Live Sardinas were almost the only thing that worked this week. (1st Nowell)
DORADO: Scattered around the area this week with few concentrations found. The exception
occurred when a boat was lucky enough to find floating debris, but for the most part I saw just as
many, if not more, Marlin flags as Dorado flags flying this week. Some fish in the 15 pound range
just off the beach kept anglers happy and there was the one or two Dorado per trip that attacked
the Marlin lures. (Shepherd’s Night Watch)
WAHOO: Nada (Away In A Manger/Island X’Mas(4 Bok Yun))
INSHORE: The action is starting to pick up a little bit as the Sierra bite starts to come on. The
fish are still on the small side but they are getting more numerous. The Dorado are supplying
some action as are a few Tuna. (Festival (of 7 lights))
NOTES: Merry Christmas and we hope you get all the fishing gear you were asking for. If you
were really good this year maybe you will get a trip to Cabo! Written to the only album of
Christmas music I own, “Poets & Angels” Music 4 The Holidays by guitarist Otmar Liebert,

Fly Hooker Daily Fish Report
“FLY HOOKER” FISH REPORT FOR 16 DECEMBER 2001
Larry and Dawn Holden were our anglers today on the “Fly Hooker”. Dawn had never caught
a Marlin and Larry wanted a chance for her to feel one on the line so they decided to give the day
to a Marlin hunt. Juan and Manuel decided to try an area about 12 miles off of the lighthouse and
they headed out in that direction. The water was a bit rough and choppy but everyone was able
to handle the conditions with no problem. The guys chose the right place because they had pretty
good action out there! A total of five Striped Marlin were hooked up and Dawn brought one of
them to the boat for a tag placement and a clean release. That fish took her about 15 minutes and
weighed around 110 pounds. The other Marlin hooked up all managed to get loose either very
quickly, just after the strike, or after a short battle. Dawn said that the action on the fish was
unbelievable with all the jumping and greyhounding runs, just like on the television show! All i9n
all they had a good day on the water and it was nice to meet such wonderful people. Until next
time, Tight Lines!
“FLY HOOKER” FISH REPORT FOR 17 DECEMBER 2001
Today we had Sherrie Poppe on the “Fly Hooker” along with her husband. The idea was to
go out to the same area the boat visited yesterday and see if they could repeat the action.
Unfortunately Sherrie started getting seasick and just as they got to the area they decided to
return. It was a short day with no fish.
“FLY HOOKER” FISH REPORT FOR 21 DECEMBER 2001
Richard DiResta, out of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, is a new friend of mine and we took the “Fly
Hooker” out for a few hours this afternoon. The objective was to go up the coast to Chileno bay
to do some snorkeling, just relax for a few hours and let the boats engines get a little work in.
Being a fisherman at heart I could not resist the urge to put out some lures on the way and we got
lucky on the way up. Richard got to bring in a Dorado of about 12 pounds, perfect size to give us
both a bag of fillets to fix for dinner. We got to Chileno and snorkeled for a few hours, I saw
some of the tamest fish I have ever seen. I have snorkeled and dove on coral reefs in Guam and
seen beautiful scenery under the water, but never the size and numbers of fish I saw on this
excursion. Big Parrotfish swimming around just 3 feet from me, Snapper, Rudderfish and Wrasse
everywhere you looked. The visibility was around 35 feet, not too bad, and the water was 76
degrees. I came back to the boat a little early and filleted to Dorado while Richard kept
snorkeling and when he got back we had a sandwich and lit up cigars and talked about the fish we
saw. It was a great afternoon and I hope we get a chance to do it again sometime soon. Until
then, Tight Lines!
Merry Christmas from George, Mary Juan and Manuel, The “Fly Hooker” Crew
