CABO SAN LUCAS FISH REPORT FOR JANUARY 14-20, 2002
WEATHER: Again the weather was nice to us, maybe that’s why the town is starting to fill up
again. Our daytime highs ranged up to the high 70’s and touched 80 twice while the nighttime
lows were in the mid 60’s. We had a few days mid week where there was a bit of overcast but
still no rain. (Meadows)
WATER: Both the Pacific and the Sea of Cortez have been like a lake! There have been low
swells and very light breezes with the wind earlier in the week coming from the south-east and
east. The water temperatures have not changed much from last weeks report. We have that temp
break located east/west across the 95 and 1150 spots then the warm water curls right up to the tip
of the Cape. This warm 78/79 degree water continues up the Pacific side until just south of
Golden Gate Banks. The water on the north side of the break is in the 72/74 range. The cold
water off of the Gordo Banks has been a slight green color, just a bit off. (The Bomber)
BAIT: Lots of Mackerel and some Caballito have been available at the normal $2 each and a few
Sardines are being caught and delivered for $20 a scoop, but they are still very small. (Tend My

FISHING:
BILLFISH: With the warm water just off shore there have been a few bigger fish around. It was
quite a surprise when a #650 Blue was brought in on Thursday and a #585 on Friday. Both of
these fish and many other smaller ones were caught on the 95 spot where the temp break has
been. It appears that the bait has concentrated in the area and the Blues are taking advantage of
it. Both fish were lure fish. Striped Marlin were being caught off of the Golden Gate Banks by
boats deep-dropping live bait. There were lots of mackerel in the area and the fish were holding
deep.(Funk #49)
YELLOWFIN TUNA: The fishing changes on a day to day basis but this week the bite on
Yellowfin was fairly steady. Most of the fish were footballs coming off of the Dolphin schools
but there were a few fish in the #150 range picked out of the edges. Slightly larger fish, in the
35-50 pound class were found and caught by boats working the San Jaime Banks with lures but
the best action came to the boats willing to put in the time and effort to get a chunk line going.
Cedar Plugs, chunks and Marauders were the hot ticket on the Tuna. (Turn To Stone)
DORADO: Scattered fish with most of them found mixed with the Dolphin and Tuna. A few
boats found concentrations under floating debris but there was not as much if it around as there
was last week. Average size on the Dorado was 20 pounds and live bait and chunks were the best
action getters once the fish had been found. (All Night Long)
WAHOO: Maybe it was the moon phase but a few of these speedsters were caught this week,
almost all as incidental catches. Average size was 30 pounds Most of them were reported as
coming on sub-surface plugs like Marauders and Magnum Rapalas. (Life’s Been Good)
INSHORE: A few Sierra and some smaller Roosterfish continue to be caught but not in any large
numbers yet. The water is still a bit warm for the Yellowtail to show up so most of the Pangas
are having better luck with Yellowfin, Skipjack and Bonita. Toss in a few Amberjack, Jack
Crevalle, Snapper and Needlefish and a Dorado or two and the inshore catch this week was quite
a mixed bag. With the water up in San Jose being green, a lot of the Pangas from there were
coming down the coast to work the area off of Grey Rock. (Rocky Mountain Way)

“FLY HOOKER” FISHING REPORT FOR 19 JANUARY, 2002
Greg Hernandez and his friends John, Joe and “Ace” were supposed to fish aboard the” Fly
Hooker” today but “Ace” was missing in action when it came time for the group to leave the
hotel. According to the group, he was last observed at 4am in the hotel and it appeared that he
might have come down with a fairly serious case of “Tequilaitius”. Oh well, the rest of the guys
had no problem going off without him! Fish fillets were the first order of the day and
approximately 8 miles out they came into a pod of Dolphin. It took a little while but they were
able to get 6 nice football Yellowfin, all from 15 to 20 pounds. A little later they caught a Dorado
of about 20 pounds and for the surprise of the day, Greg was the lucky angler to fight a Wahoo of
about 40 pounds. After 10 am the action died off and Greg wanted to go inshore to try for
Yellowtail. Juan told him that it was a bit early in the season and the water was still a bit warm
but they decided to try it anyway. No more action was had for the trip but the guys really enjoyed
themselves and left the boat with a load of fillets. Thanks guys and we look forward to fishing
