APRIL 11TH TO 17TH 2001



BILLFISH: We are pleased to report a great improvement on fishing this week. That is not to say that it is spectacular, but with water temperatures edging past the 70 F mark, we began to see striped marlin reappear. First day of this report, Wednesday, April 11th, Tony Peruchini from Everett, Wa, released an approx. 140 lb striped marlin aboard “Rebecca”, as well as boating 10 yellowfin tuna – a great day by any standard. This same day two California anglers, Gary Rawson from Redwood City and Peter Page from San Jose, did well aboard “Adriana”, releasing a striped marlin each aboard “Adriana”, 8 miles out from Chileno. Fishing cooled off, on the marlin front the next day, but Friday the 13th, was not unlucky for Mark Esposito and David Marcier, from Dallas; these guys got a marlin apiece on “Tracy Ann”, 16 miles our from Red Hill. Probably the most enviable day was that experienced by Paul Kurth from Pahrump, Nevada – he fished Tracy Ann on April 16th and tallied one striped marlin released, one 65 lb wahoo, one 30 lb dorado and 17 yellowfin tuna…..what more could he ask for? Another excellent day was had by Rod and Barbara Keller form Albany Oregon, who fished on April 17th, on “Andrea”, they released a striped marlin and went on to boat 18 yellowfin tuna ranging in size from 20 to 89 lbs. Pisces anglers had a total of 7 striped marlin this week, of which 6 were released. The fish brought in weighed 130 lbs.

OTHER SPECIES: April is known as a mass tuna month and we were getting a little worried, that is up until this week, when yellowfin catches were wide open, catches ranged from 3 to 20 fish a day, with sizes varying from 20 to 80 lbs, bait, feathers and striped marlin lures worked and most people took home a lot of fish.

There was just the odd dorado here and there, which were pretty small at around 20 lbs. The wahoo mentioned above as only one of a few caught this week and was the biggest we’ve seen in a long time. Inshore there is still action on sierra, skipjack and even some nice yellowtail, which are up to 14 lbs, but catches are slowing down.

LOCATION: Marlin on the Cortez side, off of Chileno and Redhill, tuna schools started off in the same area and moved into the Pacific off of Finisterra.

WEATHER CONDITONS: Clear sunny skies, seas good, some wind in the afternoons.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 69-70 F

BEST LURES: Live bait, assorted feathers, green/yellow lures.
