PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT APRIL 18TH TO 24TH 2001
PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT
APRIL 18TH TO 24TH
BILLFISH: We are very pleased to report a huge improvement on the fishing this week. Weather has warmed up considerably and there were a variety of fish caught, leading to a ninety-five percent, catch success rate for us, with a little over sixty percent of boats catching billfish. We had some outstanding catches this week, such as April 18th, when Tony Oberdzinski from Michigan, fished on “Tracy Ann” and released two striped marlin and landed a beautiful wahoo, a couple of pounds shy of 100 lbs, as if this wasn’t enough, he also boated five yellowfin tuna (see photo at www.piscessportfishing.com). Other great catches were, three striped marlin, aboard “Rebecca” on April 22nd, by Martin and Rebecca Dunlap from Huntsville, Texas. A couple of days later, this same boat scored another three stripers released, as well as a 50 lb wahoo for Thomas Gunn, James Breen and Alan Katigbak, all from Ohio. The Rebecca was our boat of the week, totaling ten striped marlin, 23 tuna and one wahoo. Ten-year-old Conner Morey, from Long Beach, CA. released his first ever striped marlin on April 20th aboard “Andrea”. A nice catch was reported aboard Gaviota, for Ruffino Vega, from Santa Clara, CA. – he boated a 272 lb swordfish on April 17th . Although I didn’t see them with my own eyes, two big fish were caught this past week and the information seems to be accurate. One was a 507 lb blue marlin caught on a 28 ft boat and the other was a 370 lb black marlin caught from a panga. Pisces anglers caught a total of 27 striped marlin this week, with all but one released. Average weight was 140 lbs.
OTHER SPECIES: The most outstanding catch apart from marlin, was a 420 lb hammerhead shark caught on April 24th that was weighed in at the main dock. There were more wahoo than we’ve seen in quite a while, this past week. As mentioned above there was a 98. 5 lb’er on Tracy Ann and we also heard of a 100 lb plus fish, a couple of days later. We also had another half dozen in the 50 to 60 lb category. Yellowfin tuna were the most numerous sport fish caught this week again, with boats catching anywhere from 1 to 14 in the 20 to 40 lb class and the odd fish over 60 lbs. Just a few dorado around 20 lbs. Inshore some sierra, but this is slowing down. Some large red snapper close to the old lighthouse.
LOCATION: Redhill 15 miles out, out from Chileno 18-22 miles south, 10 miles out from the Old Lighthouse.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Beautiful, clear sunny skies, seas mostly calm.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 71 F
BEST LURES: Live bait and lures are equally effective at this time.
