PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT

OCT. 11TH TO 16TH, 2001

BILLFISH: These are pretty exciting times in Cabo, with a flurry of tournaments just getting underway. As we write this the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament has just started, with a total of 57 entries. The nice thing about this tournament is there are cash prizes for most billfish releases and also prizes for dorado, tuna and wahoo, as well as the more traditional awards for largest marlin. This format allows everybody a shot at a prize. Day one has Finish Line in the lead with a 350 lb blue marlin, in the striped marlin division, which is release, unless the fish is over 175 lbs, a beautiful 202 lb striper was landed – largest dorado on day one was 62 lbs, largest tuna was 134 lbs and biggest wahoo was 32 lbs. Just before this tournament started, everybody was encouraged by two large fish. One was 800 lbs! This monster was caught on October 12th by Alan Schuchardt and Pat Hutsler from St. Louis, Missouri aboard Reel Tequila, taking 4 hours to land on 80 lb test line, hooked 5 miles out from Cabeza de Ballena (see photo). The other fish was caught by Eddie Huggs from Austin, Tx aboard Options on October 16th and weighed a little over 500 lbs. This is good news with big tournaments underway as the blues have been pretty much absent since Hurricane Juliette. Throughout this period about forty percent of boats caught billfish, with the majority being striped marlin, with a few small blues and sailfish mixed in. Most boats got one marlin and occasionally two, along with dorado and some tuna. Pisces anglers caught a total of 18 striped marlin all released, 2 blue marlin and 2 sailfish released. Our overall catch success rate for all species combined.

OTHER SPEICES: This week was the best so far for big tuna, wetting everybody’s appetite – Bryan Smarch from Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan fished aboard “Andrea” , a first time deep-sea angler, he landed an impressive 250 lb yellowfin tuna (see photo), that took him 58 minutes to land on 50 lb test 28 miles out from the Hotel Finisterra; they also released a striped marlin and boated three dorado. This wasn’t the only big tuna, a 220 lb fish was caught by Ray Carlson form Tucson, Arizona a couple of days before aboard Marisol III taking 55 minutes to land on 50 lb test after taking a blue and silver lure. There were several other tuna up to 100 lbs too, but the average weight was closer to 35-40 lbs, with most boats not getting more than one or two. Dorado was the most abundant fish throughout the week, being caught all over the place, though average weights were on the small side, some were as big as 60 lbs. Some wahoo, but very few reached 50 lbs. Skipjacks inshore as well as roosters to 40 lbs.

LOCATION:95 Spot, Chileno, Red Hill, Old Lighthouse, Jamie Banks.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear sunny skies, seas good all week.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP:78-82 F

BEST LURES:Not any one type, live bait for striped marlin, blue/white and petrolero lures.
