Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

Pisces Weekly Fish Report

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT

NOV. 7TH TO 13TH, 2001

BILLFISH: The last day of this report provided us with yet another 800 lb plus fish – the third we’ve had in Cabo in less than a month. In fact I can’t remember a time, when there have ever been so many large fish so close together. Jim, Wes and Sonny from Arkansas and Louisana, fought their 820 lb monster together, which is why it only took them 50 minutes to boat. They were fishing aboard Mucho Loco, a 31 ft Bertram, when they hooked up just three miles off of the Old Lighthouse. The fish took a lure attached to a 300 lb leader and 80 lb test line. Due to its weight this fish obviously had no problem feeding despite the fact that it was missing it’s bill! (see photo) Just goes to show that Cabo is one of the best spots in the world to fish and does produce the big ones too, not just stripers. We had the 3rd annual W.O.N Jackpot Tuna Tournament this week, which meant that most boats in town were concentrating on Tuna, instead of marlin; however, we had good numbers of billfish with close to fifty-percent catching predominantly striped marlin, some blues and lesser numbers of sailfish. Our overall catch success rate for all species combined was seventy-seven percent; again this number could have been higher if they were concentrating on them. Karina had an outstanding day on Nov. 11th with two striped marlin and one blue marlin released for Ted Rarrick and Greg Standford from Scottsdale, Az. John Rygiol and party from Dana Point, Ca, were pleased with their day on La Brisa on the 8th with three striped marlin releases and two tuna. Pisces anglers caught a total of four blue marlin released, thirty-four striped marlin and one sailfish, all released.

OTHER SPECIES: As mentioned above this week Cabo hosted the third annual Western Outdoor News Tuna Tournament. The event had a great turnout, all things considered, producing it’s largest ever field of 154 boats. Everybody enjoys this tournament due to it’s low stress, fun outline, as well as being a tournament anybody can afford to fish in. The organization was top notch and plenty of 100 lb plus fish were taken. Jay Bush on Stimulator is on a winning streak; he won the Bisbee just a couple of week ago and took first place again with a 156 lb yellowfin on the last day of fishing. Jay was fishing with John Goette from Orange, Ca who was the lucky angler to reel in the catch that produced them $170,680.00 in prize money. Jay hooked up on a temperature break 34 miles, out at 180 degrees from Cabo – his fish took a Mexican flag feather with a jet head. Second place went to Mel Ostberg from El Cajon, Ca. for a 151.6 lb fish aboard Picante Express – total winnings were $126,280.00. Third place went to last year’s winners, Blue Thunder for angler Philip Arciero Jr. from Anaheim Ca, for a 149.10 lb tuna giving them $2,960.00 in winnings. The overall biggest fish in the dorado/wahoo category went to Rick Hosmer from Manhattan Beach, Ca for a 69.7 lb wahoo on Gancho. In regular fishing news dorado were caught throughout the week, but are not being found is schools like we expect at this time of year. Weights averaged 15 to 25 lbs. Catches of yellowfin tuna were not fantastic, boats went a long way out, but were frustrated as even when they found them swimming with porpoise it was hard to hook up. Anglers could see them leaping all over the place but catching them was another story. We had quite a few wahoo this week, picked up while trolling, with weights from 43 to 60 lbs. Inshore some nice yellowtail catches just off the point, skipjacks, some roosters, needlefish and sierra.

LOCATION: Boats in the tournament opted for the area up above the Gordo or San Jaime. Others ranged from Chileno in the Sea of Cortez up as far as Golden Gate on the Pacific.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear, sunny skies, seas moderate. Today is the first day that we feel that winter has actually arrived – i.e you need a blanket at night.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP.77- 81 F

BEST LURES: Blue marlin assorted lures, stripers live bait, tuna, dorado, wahoo, feathers, lures, bait.
