Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT

JULY 5TH TO 11TH, 2002

BILLFISH: To be honest, we are still not seeing the number of billfish that we would like to here at Land’s End. Normally by this time of year we start to see a smattering of blue marlin appear, but the persistently cold weather seems to be keeping them at bay. This is not to say there are none around - a few have been sighted and even hooked, but none were actually caught. Striped marlin catches remain steady, with a little less than half of the boats hooking up to fish in the 120 to 180 lb class. This past week we again saw the see-sawing of best fishing locations, for several days the Jaime Bank on the Pacific was the place, before abruptly switching to the Cortez side from the 95 spot up to Punta Gorda. Tom Ginn from Washington State, fishing on his own aboard “Tracy Ann” had a fabulous day on July 8th. He had a double hook up on striped marlin, being the only fisherman on board, the crew left one of the fish to play in free spool, while Tom battled the first fish, who put up quite a fight, seeing as it was tail wrapped and wasn’t feeling too much pain. The crew did an incredible job of reviving this fish once it was brought to the leader, as Tom went on to fight his second fish of the day and then boated a 60 lb dorado to boot. This angler was thrilled and told us it was “his best day ever out fishing in Cabo” due not only to the success of his day, but the cooler weather. When boats were lucky enough to catch marlin it was usually just the one fish, though several were fortunate to have a couple. The best days this week were July 9th and 11th when nearly every boat out caught marlin. Our overall catch success rate for all species combined was seventy-two percent. Pisces anglers caught a total of twenty-one striped marlin, all released. We feel it is just a question of time, before the weather warms up; the last couple of nights have been slightly warmer and we are on the verge of the fishing taking off in a big way.

OTHER SPECIES: Dorado and tuna catches this week were consistent, though there weren’t huge amounts of them. Close to half of the charters sent out caught Dorado, with just one per boat the average, though some did get two or three. Weights were quite good ranging in size from 25 to 60 lbs. Yellowfin tuna catches were on the slow side, with just a few caught whilst trolling in diverse locations in the 15 to 50 lb class. La Brisa fished San Jaime one day and did manage to get five. A couple of anglers did have combination days that they were pleased with: Regan Stringfellow, from Austin, Texas had an enjoyable day June 9th aboard “Valerie”, he released a striped marlin at Cabeza de Ballena, and then went on to boat a 30 lb wahoo and two yellowfin tuna. Tom Wojcik form Baldwin, Maryland, fished on “Ruthless”, July 11th and released a striped marlin and boated a 50 lb wahoo and 30 lb dorado too. Inshore there was some action on roosterfish, but it wasn’t consistent, some of the better catches were at La Playita. Closer to Cabo quite a few pargo were caught as well as some amberjack.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: While most people are suffering through heat waves, we are enjoying our cooler than normal weather. Skies are clear, slight breeze in the afternoons, still some fog on the Pacific in the early morning. Seas have been fair to good; water is now turning bluer.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 72-73 F

BEST LURES: Live bait, orange/black, orange/pink, green/yellow.
