Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT

AUG. 1-8TH 2002

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT AUGUST 2ND TO 8TH, 2002 BILLFISH: This week in Cabo we had pretty consistent fishing, with an overall catch success rate, for all species combined of eighty nine percent. What we would like to see more of though, are blue marlin, as only a few big fish, over 250 lbs were caught this past week for the Cabo fleet, as well as a smattering of 120 to 170 lb’ers. On Pisces charters we did better on striped marlin, with some anglers doing extremely well, such as John Barrett from Bordentown, R.I, who managed catch a total of five stripers, aboard “Rebecca” on August 2nd – all but one of these fish were released and John also boated an enormous 80 lb dorado, at the 95 spot. William Shaddock IV from Houston, fished with buddy Phillip Wheatly from Santa Clara, Ca. late last week aboard “Tracy Ann”, these guys were thrilled to catch a blue marlin, two striped marlin, a sailfish, dorado and yellowfin tuna, during their two day trip. Rick Walsh, from Ohio, is just a lucky guy; we don’t know how he does it. Rick went out on “Rebecca” on August 3rd and released two striped marlin and then went on to boat three huge tuna, weighing 200, 80 and 60 lbs respectively, in the San Jose area. Last year, Rick fished this same time and boat and achieved a Super Offshore Grand Slam (two blue marlin, a black marlin, a striped marlin & sailfish in one day). There were many boats this period that had multiple billfish days; “Adriana” on August 3rd had two stripes and a sail, this same day “Valerie” had three stripes. “Tracy Ann” on August 8th had two stripes and a sail, for Merle Erickson from Chicago. Weather has warmed up considerably but still should be hotter. Fishing locations are changing back and forth as they have done over the past few months. Within one to two weeks, we should see the fishing wide open for all species. Pisces anglers caught a total of 28 striped marlin, all but one released and five sailfish all released. The marlin are averaging 120 to 150 lbs and the sailfish 70 lbs.

OTHER SPECIES: Dorado fishing was consistent, but more for quality of the fish, rather than quantity. Boats seldom got more than three and more often it was just a single fish, but sizes were good at 30 to 60 lbs. This week we didn’t see the super tuna catches of the previous week, most fish were school sized, at 25 to 35 lbs, but more a few more were caught than dorado, boats averaged two to six fish, for every 4th boat or so. Wahoo catches were on the slow side and when caught were on the small side at around 35 lbs. Adam Kolosky, fishing on “Valerie” on August 4th had a nice selection of small game, capturing five nice tuna, one wahoo, a dorado and also boating a striped marlin. Inshore pangas caught small dorado & skipjacks, but not much else. LOCATION:La Playita, San Jose, Cerro Colorado, Punta Gorda, 95 spot, San Jaime and at the close of this week off of the Old Lighthouse on the Pacific side. WEATHER CONDITIONS: Hot, sunny, rain clouds over the mountains on some afternoons, making it humid, but no rain yet; Pacific still has a nice breeze. Seas a little choppy on the Pacific. AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 78-80 F BEST LURES: Live bait, orange/yellow, “petroleros”. Based on the catches of Pisces Fleet by Tracy Ehrenberg
