PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT

AUGUST 9TH TO 15TH, 2002

BILLFISH: Wow, what a fabulous week…..it doesn’t get much better. Pisces anglers had an overall catch success rate this period of ninety-nine percent for all species combined, with eighty six percent of charters catching billfish. We had an assortment of big game fish, though most surprising is the number of striped marlin being caught, outnumbering all other billfish. Not only did we have great amounts of striped marlin, we also had fair amounts of blue marlin, albeit on the small side, as well as several sailfish and even what somebody claimed to be a white marlin (I didn’t see it, but they swore it was). Of course we so many fish we had lots of happy anglers and tons of fish stories. Angler of the week has to go to Merle Erickson from Chicago……during his week visit to Cabo, Merle had a total of seventeen billfish, consisting of 13 striped marlin ranging from 110 to 190 lbs, two blue marlin (one estimated at 300 lbs) and two sailfish, as well as 7 dorado from 20 to 50 lbs. Merle fished aboard Tracy Ann, skippered by Julio Castro. On August 10th, Lauren Turner & friends fished aboard “La Brisa” on August 10th and released a blue marlin, striped marlin and white marlin, off of Chileno. Russell Sugg had an outstanding day August 11th aboard “Ruthless”, releasing three striped marlin, a sailfish and boating four dorado, not bad for a first timer. Another first timer angler, Janet Dennis, from Vancouver, was thrilled with her catch of an approx. 150 striped marlin and 45 lb dorado. Pisces anglers had a total of 61 striped marlin, all but two released, four blue marlin – three released and three sailfish, all released.

OTHER SPECIES: Dorado were the most widely caught smaller game fish, this past week, with some getting up to 60 lbs, though the average weight was 20 to 30 lbs. They were found on both the Pacific & Cortez sides and took a combination of lures and bait. Yellowfin tuna catches were on the slow side with only 10th boat or so catching this species and then again they weren’t of any notable size at an average of 20 lbs. Just a few wahoo this week, also on the small side at around 30 lbs. Other catches were a tiger and hammerhead shark, both released. In shore some roosters up to 30 lbs, very few sierra, some bonitas too along with a few tiny dorado.

LOCATION: Mostly on the Pacific, from the Old Lighthouse to the Jaime Bank and on some days up as far Golden Gate, boats also fished off of Chileno and San Jose.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear, sunny skies, seas calm on the Cortez side, slightly rough on the Pacific, weather still cooler than normal, for this time of year.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 80 F

BEST LURES: Green/yellow, red/brown, live bait.
