Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT SEPT. 20-26TH 2002

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT SEP. 20th TO 26th 2002 BILLFISH: Fishing in Cabo right now is good – we had an overall catch success rate of close to ninety percent, for all species combined, with forty-two percent of charters fighting billfish. “Ruthless” was our top blue marlin boat, fighting two big fish, the first for Elliott Stott from Greenville, Tn on September 22nd. Elliott had fished a couple of days in rough weather without success. Fishing took a turn for the better, so we gave him a call and suggested he gave it another shot. Elliott fishing with another gentleman got a double hook-up on dorado, twelve miles off of Chileno, which attracted the attention of a sizeable blue, Captain Leon dropped back a caballito and got the fish to take the bait, before handing the rod to Elliott, who took 45 minutes to release the fish on 30 lb test. This angler was enthralled with his fish, “it was as it we battled souls” he later told me as he explained how the fish had come out of the water behind the boat. The Hyrena brothers from Ohio were down for their annual trip with us – these guys always do well, but the highlight of their trip, was September 25th, when the released a 500 lb blue marlin and a striped marlin, and boated two dorado aboard “Ruthless” 8 miles off of the Hotel Finisterra - this fish took a purple and black lure. This same day Billy and Donna Dale from Powhatan, Va, had excellent fishing aboard “Andrea” releasing both a striped marlin and a sailfish as well as boating three dorado and two tuna. There was also a 380 lb blue marlin on Sept. 20th aboard “Andrea” also, our third biggest fish of the week. Bait was scarce again this period, but striped marlin bit more on artificials anyway, as did the blues. Pisces anglers caught a total of 5 blue marlin – four released, 13 striped marlin all released and 4 sailfish released. OTHER SPECIES: We had a nice increase on dorado this week and for the first time in a while, some boats got up to seven (the Hyrena brothers again) other boats averaged one to two with weights around 20-30 lbs ; one exception was a beautiful 53 lb’er caught by Michael Elias from Dallas, Tx, (see photo below). Hardly any wahoo this week, but as we close this report captains reported strikes on this species. Inshore a few small dorado, skipjacks, small pompano and the odd rooster here and there up to 15 lbs.. LOCATION: Starting off at 95 spot and Chileno area then moving off of the Old Lighthouse and up to Golden Gate. WEATHER CONDITIONS: Hot, humid, cooling towards the end of the week, windy, seas on the rough side. AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 83 F BEST LURES: Striped marlin took more lures than bait this week, as did the blues, sailfish preferred live bait, dorado and tuna an assortment of lures.Based on the catches of Pisces Fleet By Tracy Ehrenberg
