PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT NOV. 9TH TO 15TH, 2002

BILLFISH: Not very good for billfish this week, in fact the catch rate for marlin was a low thirty-nine percent. That might be o.k for other parts of the world but not for Cabo. As I’ve mentioned before, it seems like the season is ahead of itself, with cooler weather which should have brought an onslaught of striped marlin, however, this last week had turned very warm and it’s like we’re back in October again. Despite the low billfish count, our overall catch success rate was eighty percent for all species combined, which means quite a few boats were “skunked” this period. Most of the week was on the slow side, though we did have a group from Scotland, that battled a huge blue estimated at 700 lbs, aboard Tracy-Ann, though unfortunately she broke the line. A couple of days after this Tim Kramer from Lake Havasu, Az, was fortunate to release both a blue and striped marlin, 23 miles straight out from Cabo aboard “Adriana”. Adam Stein & Richard Hinson from California, did very well to release three striped marlin on November 11th, aboard “Libre”. Towards the end of the week we saw a definite improvement despite a waxing moon – on the last day of this report Cameron Heimbigner from Snowmohish, Wa caught a blue marlin, a striped marlin and 6 dorado aboard “Rebecca” and Jay Dekovic from Winterpark Co. released a striped marlin and boated 4 dorado, a wahoo and yellowfin tuna, aboard “Ruthless”. Pisces anglers caught a total of 19 striped marlin, 2 blue marlin and 7 sailfish. OTHER SPECIES: Wahoo catches continue to be very good, as previously mentioned this is the best wahoo season in a decade or so. On November 10th , Martin Pola and party, caught 8 wahoo from 25 to 45 lbs and a dorado aboard “Andrea”. Nobody else matched this, but boats continued to catch one and sometimes two in this same weight category, with the odd fish here and there going as large as 75 lbs. Dorado catches improved slightly this week, with the majority of boats still catching just one or two and the lucky ones up to a half dozen. Yellowfin tuna catches were on the slow side with the average weight 25 lbs, most being picked up trolling for billfish. WEATHER CONDITIONS: Warm days in the low 90’s, skies clear, seas calm. LOCATION: Golden Gate, Old Lighthouse, 96 spot, Chileno. AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 79-82 F BEST LURES: Live bait, orange/yellow, purple/black, green/white/yellow.
