Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Capt. Tracy Ehrenberg

Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

January 3rd to 9th, 2003

BILLFISH: An excellent week here in Cabo especially for marlin, though towards the end of this week, there was rather an abrupt slow down on them, with the Golden Gate no longer producing the goods – the fish were there in good numbers but it was harder to get them to bite. Some boats decided to try their luck elsewhere, such as Cabeza de Ballena and the 95 spot. Usually if you catch three marlin in a day, you get a mention in this report but we had so many outstanding catches, that we upped it to four this week. Top angler was Jim Rogers from Landenberg, Pennsylvania, for releasing five marlin aboard “Adriana” on January 5th, he then went on to release three more on the 6th and released another aboard a panga. Robert Elsworth fished “Valerie” on January 5th and did well to get a mixed bag of three striped marlin released, one sailfish released and five dorado boated. The following day this same boat achieved four marlin releases and one dorado for the Solee team from Spokane, Wa. January 8th was our most productive day, resulting in four stripes for Brett and Michael Viney from Minnesota aboard Rebecca, four stripes for Jeffery Gotfried & Adele from Northridge, Ca. aboard Ruthless and four stripes on Andrea for Patrick Hasset from Bornsville, Minnesota. Gino Pierce from Atascadero, Ca had the biggest striper of the week at 200 lbs and was fortunate to get a couple of dorado too. The way marlin were caught towards the end of the week was about half of them up on the surface and half with weighted bait, down deeper. Water temperature has dropped a little on the Pacific, to about 73 F, which slightly warmer water being found on the Cortez side. Pisces anglers caught a total of eighty-three striped marlin this week, with eighty-one released, along with a sailfish. OTHER SPECIES: As mentioned at the close of the report last week, there was a beautiful 260 lb tuna caught aboard La Brisa on January 3rd. Since then not many have been caught, despite being seen at the Golden Gate feeding, they could not be persuaded to take anything anglers presented. We were thankful for dorado this week, which were consistent throughout the week, mostly in one’s and two’s picked up whilst trolling; some boats that found driftwood got up to a half dozen. Size on the dorado was fair at 15 to 30 lbs. Inshore sierra catches were crazy, with as many as you wanted, ranging in size from four to eight lbs. Still some wahoo around, in the 40 to 60 lb class, but on a downward trend. WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear, sunny skies, most of the week, seas calm to moderate, turning a bit windy towards the end of the week. AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 73 F BEST LURES: Live bait.
