Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

May 2nd to 8th, 2003

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT MAY 2ND TO 8TH, 2003

BILLFISH: Although fishing is not fabulous for marlin right now, we are pleased to report an increase – last week only twenty percent of charters managed to release striped marlin; this week the figure climbed to fifty-five percent – as substantial increase. Best day for us was at the start of this period on May 2nd, top boat was “Ni Modo” releasing four this day, the rest of our boats averaged two a piece as well as small game. This same day “Tracy Ann” released two striped marlin and boated fifteen yellowfin tuna for Leonard Sanchez & Al Verastegui from San Antonio & Tempe respectively. Johnny Cavazos from Brownsville, Tx, was out this day too, aboard “La Brisa” and was pleased to release, two early season sailfish and also boat eight tuna. Ray Orlowski from Mt. Union, Pennsylvania, had a nice day on May 4th, with a striped marlin released, and 15 tuna boated in the 25 to 30 lb class, aboard “Tracy Ann”. As the week progressed we saw more small game than marlin, however, boats were seeing them and catching the odd one here and there. As we close this report, we hear good things from the fleet, with nearly all boats catching at the moment and seeing lots. The water temperature is higher, between 75 –78 F and is a beautiful blue. We are also seeing lots of flying fish, an indicator that blue marlin will start to show up. All these are good omens for the Rolex/IGFA Offshore Championship set to start this Monday. Pisces anglers caught a total of forty-four billfish this week, mostly striped marlin, the others sailfish, all but one marlin were released. Average weight was 105 to 130 lbs. OTHER SPECIES: Yellowfin tuna was the most widely caught sport fish this week; forty-three percent of charters caught this species, with weights ranging from 20 to 50 lbs; average catch was 3-4 per boat, with the more fortunate vessels getting up to 15. About the same amount of charters caught dorado, but the actual numbers of fish per boat were lower, with an average day’s catch being 1-2 and occasionally 5; weights averages 20-25 lbs, though some were as big as 50 lbs. Wahoo, which we all love to eat, have cost us a lot in lost lures this week – they are being found off of the Finisterra, as well as off of Chileno and are getting as large as 80 lbs, some boats got a couple in a day. Roosters and sierra can be had inshore as well yellowtail. We also had one 80 lb hammerhead released. LOCATION: Week started off of San Jose, and then moved back towards Cabo, ending up off of Chileno and the 95 spot. WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear, sunny skies, calm seas on the Cortez side, whitecaps in the afternoon on the Pacific. AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 75 F BEST LURES: Black/red, green/yellow, live bait. Based on the catches of Pisces Fleet by Tracy Ehrenberg
