Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

May 24th to 29th, 2003

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT MAY 24TH TO 29TH, 2003 BILLFISH: Marlin fishing was good and pretty consistent this past week, with most boats averaging one to two striped marlin each plus a dorado. There were lots of fish around and close in too; some clients reported seeing thirty or more marlin in a day, but getting a hook up was not easy. Firstly bait has been scarce; the local baitmen haven’t caught anything this whole week and we have had to buy less fresh fish from the bait barge. Mackerel wasn’t always available so mullet was used, but the majority of fish weren’t hungry, maybe because there was an influx of flying fish and squid that they have been feeding on. Nevertheless there were some great catches, such as four stripers being released just four miles out from Santa Maria, by John Ruzicka from Redding, Ca and Ken Ogden from Shasta Lake, Ca., aboard “Rebecca” on May 27th. This same day William Wen & Allyson Schlenger from Renton, Wa out on “Andrea” did well to release two stripers, plus a sailfish. “Rebecca” also had a three fish day on the 26th for Murray Judy and Gary McConnell from Carlsbad & Encinitas, Ca., respectively. Stimulator, had one of the first blues of the season, an average size fish at 230 lbs, released. Mid-week we had a very cold wind blow into Cabo from the Pacific, making us feel like we were back in December, this lowered the water temperature considerably. Our overall catch success rate for all species combined this week was a little over eighty-five percent – our marlin catch success rate was sixty-eight percent. Pisces anglers caught a total of 58 striped marlin, averaging 110 to 150 lbs, all were released except for one that died; 1 sail and 1 blue were also released. OTHER SPECIES: Quite a slow down on dorado this week in fact we only had sixteen the whole week. These were fish that averaged 20 lbs and were picked up trolling; one to two was the average catch. Yellowfin tuna was also on the slow side, but then again most people were after marlin and didn’t bother looking for them. We did have one boat venture up to San Jaime on the Pacific – they lucked out managing to get seventeen school size fish. Just one wahoo for us, small at 30 lbs. Jack Daley visiting from Boston had fun catching five tuna’s and a few dorado too….sorry we didn’t make the marlin Jack, next time. There was quite a variety of other fish this week such as hammerhead and mako sharks, roosterfish, jack crevalle, skipjacks and even a 14 lb sierra – all were caught in small quantities. WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear sunny skies, foggy in mornings, night’s cold and windy, seas rough on the Pacific, moderate to rough on Cortez. AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 69-71 F BEST LURES: Live bait. Based on the catches of Pisces Fleet by Tracy Ehrenberg
