Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

June 27th to July 3rd, 2003
PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT
JUNE 27TH TO JULY 3RD, 2003
BILLFISH: Fishing was not very good in Cabo this past week, in fact our overall catch success rate for all species combined was a low fifty-nine percent, with just twenty-eight percent of vessels fortunate to catch billfish. Another thing to factor into the lower catch rates is the lack of fishermen in town, most of the Cabo fleet stayed tied up this week. All was not doom and gloom though, as always some people were luckier than others – Ron Shiraishi spent his birthday with wife Judy aboard “Tracy Ann” on July 1st and was thrilled to release two striped marlin and boat eight yellowfin tuna, 30 miles straight out from Cabo. A few days before this Jeff Bird from Orange, Ca. released two stripers and landed two dorado, 25 miles off the point fishing on the “Karina”. Jonathan Gill from Brentwood, Tennessee, fished this same boat on June 28th and had a nice assortment of fish to keep him busy all day: a striped marlin released, five tunas and two dorado boated 25 miles off of the Old Lighthouse. “Valerie” did report having a large fish on, around the 600 lb mark, 30 miles off the point, they clearly sighted the huge fish, but it was only on for about 10 seconds before breaking the line. To be frank fishing is not what we expect at the moment, as we mentioned in previous weeks, it is too cold for this time of year - we are now into July and you still need a blanket at night. Very few boats have ventured into the Pacific, due to wind and rough seas, though some hardy pangas have hugged the shore for roosters. Boats are not sighting as many billfish as before, but then again this may be due to a location change. For a whole month they were as close as three miles in, by Chileno and then abruptly switched for 20-30 miles offshore. Right now is a transition period from striped marlin season to blue and as soon as we get warmer weather fishing will take off. As we close this report boats are announcing catches of striped marlin – an average of one per boat – 20 miles off of Chileno. Pisces anglers caught a total of fourteen striped marlin and one sailfish, with twelve marlin and the sail released. Average weight on the stripers is 150 –180 lbs.
OTHER SPECIES: More tuna than anything else were caught this week, but we can’t really sat tuna fishing is good. It was a matter of being in the right place at the right time and being able to get between 1 and 5 in the 20 to 40 lb class. They were not in any set place, but the better days were when boats fished far out 25-30 miles. Dorado catches were fair, found over a widespread area, with nearly all picked up whilst trolling for marlin –every third boat or so caught between one and three in the 15 to 30 lb class. We did have a couple of nice wahoo, such as a 65 lb’er caught aboard “Andrea” on June 29th. Inshore pangas caught more amberjack and jack crevalle than anything else, with a few roosters and needlefish too.
LOCATION: Chileno 6 miles, Palmilla 12 miles, south25-30 miles.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Sunny, breezy, seas moderate.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: There was a dip in water temperature close to Cabo mid-week, down to 69-70, further out at Punta Gorda at the close of the week it was as high as 76 F.
BEST LURES: Live bait.
