Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT
JULY 11TH TO 17TH, 2003
BILLFISH: We had some pretty fabulous days this week in Cabo, though fishing was a bit on the strange side, with lots of striped marlin and hardly any blues. Not that we’re complaining; anglers did well - with seventy three percent of boats hooking up to striped marlin or sailfish. Top boat for us this week was “Rebecca” catching and releasing six stripers on July 15th for James, Chris & Patrick Gleason from Downingtown, PA on July 15th, amazingly just one half mile off of the famous Cabo arch. This same day “Ruthless” had three releases for Marcus & Marsha Starkey from Port Arkansas, TX and Clint & Holly Powell also from Texas released three aboard “Karina” – it was a lucky day for Texans, as on “Valerie” the Barsch family from Fredricksburg had four stripers to the boat too.
These are great numbers, but there were some boats that drew blanks, which may have been due to the abrupt change in location – from very close to Cabo to four miles off of Punta Gorda by week’s close. Many fish were sighted but not all were hungry. The average catch for most boats was two striped marlin per day, with nearly all taken on live bait. The weather has warmed up considerably but is still nowhere as hot as it should be. Pisces anglers caught a total of 53 striped marlin this week and two sailfish, all but three marlin were released. Weights were from 100 to 170 lbs. Our overall catch success rate for all species combined was seventy-nine percent.
OTHER SPECIES: The really big news, didn’t even happen in Cabo, it took place in Puerta Vallarta, where a resident of the East Cape, fishing aboard their own boat in Puerto Vallarta, landed a new ladies record for yellowfin tuna. Martha Warlaumont took just half an hour to land the monster tuna, on 100 lb test line, which taped out to 325 lbs. The problem was they couldn’t get their fished officially weighed by an IGFA rep in Puerto Vallarta, so they put the fish on ice and 31 hours later had it weighed by Minerva Smith here in their home port of Cabo San Lucas. The previous record was 304 lbs held since 1993 – the official weight on Martha’s fish was 308 lbs – imagine what it would have been if weighed right away! Not really a great deal happening on small game in Cabo, we had spotty dorado catches with just the odd one here and there no more than 30 lbs caught. Even fewer tuna between 18 and 30 lbs. We did have a couple of respectable wahoo, picked up on marlin jigs, weighing 40 and 60 lbs.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear, sunny skies, seas moderate now turning flat, air temps in the 90’s, some nights breezy on the Pacific.
LOCATION: Arch, Pedregal, Old Lighthouse 2 miles, Morro Prieto, Cabeza de Ballena, Punta Gorda.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 78 F
BEST LURES: live bait, yellow/green, guacamaya, red/yellow.
