Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT JULY 18TH TO 25TH, 2003

BILLFISH: A definite change in fishing this week, as at last we start to get some of our hot July weather. This was apparent by the smattering of blue marlin caught this period, not a lot, but a start. We heard of several blues from 160 to 380 lbs caught by the Cabo fleet and our own “Ruthless” had one close to 300 lbs on July 23rd for Danny York from Nashville. We would also like to congratulate J. Michael Smith for a big striper, caught on his 40th birthday aboard “Tracy Ann” – the fish was 170 lbs. Other notable catches were three stripers aboard “Valerie” for Mark Sydow and David Bishop on July 18th – this same day “Rebecca” had two stripes and a sailfish for Brian & Tommy Rhea from Austin, Texas and “Andrea” also had three stripes for Don & Dona Friscche from San Antonio. A couple of days later Amaury Santiago from Miami and party, out aboard “Ni Modo”, released two stripers and boated a 50 lb wahoo and three dorado up to 50 lbs. It looks like a transition period is here, boats continue to see striped marlin, more than usual for this time of year, with most spotting at least a couple per day, regardless of where they are fishing. Other boats reported seeing up to ten in a day, but the fish are picky and again this week it was a case of finding a hungry fish. With an increase in the water temperature boats have experienced more strikes by blue marlin and soon now, we should start having more catches. The warmer weather has also brought an increase of sailfish. “Tracy Ann” released three in succession for Thomas Noel on July 23rd. Both bait and lures have worked, though bait had a slightly higher success rate. All the above sounds great, but there were a fair percentage of boats that were skunked. Our overall catch success rate this week was seventy-eight percent and a little over forty percent of boats caught billfish. Pisces anglers caught a total of 30 striped marlin and, 1 blue marlin and 8 sailfish – all but three fish were released. OTHER SPECIES: We had one red hot tuna day, on July 20th, when boats caught between two and twenty yellowfin in the 15 to 30 lb class. The fish were found 20 miles off of the Hotel Finisterra and took a variety of lures, but this was short-lived, as they had moved on to other grounds by the following day. A lot of wahoo this week weigh weights from 30 to 60 lbs and a few boats had two in a day. Dorado catches were consistent, but boats seldom caught more than one, usually an odd fish picked up whilst trolling for marlin. Weights were from 25 to 50 lbs. Inshore fishing was on the slow side, with just a few sierra and skipjack caught. WEATHER CONDITIONS: skies mostly sunny, some thunder clouds, hot, seas on the rough side on the Pacific, smoother on the Cortez side. AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 79 F inshore to 83F offshore. BEST LURES: Live bait, green/yellow, guacamaya, blue/white. Based on the catches of Pisces Fleet by Tracy Ehrenberg
