Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

August 1st to 7th , 2003

BILLFISH: Fishing is as it should be for this time of year, blue marlin on the increase as well as small game fish, with striped marlin still around. I was quite surprised at the number of blue marlin we had this week, as they appeared suddenly, in good numbers, probably after the tuna schools that were located close to Cabo. Size on these blues wasn't huge at an average of 160 to 250 lbs. This is not to say that every boat is catching marlin, in fact just forty-six percent of charters caught billfish, but this is what we expect during August. Our overall catch success rate for all species combined was a respectable eighty-four percent. Eleven year old Gothard K. Reck from New Orleans was thrilled to release an approximate 190 lb blue marlin on August 4th twenty miles out from Cabo. Kent Hughes and party from Austin, Texas had a fabulous time in Cabo, here is what they did in Kent’s own words “Aug 2-6 2003: Our first trip to Cabo was to celebrate my wife's 40th Birthday with 10 family and friends. My wife and I had both wanted to catch a Marlin -- just one. Our two Pisces boats landed 4 Striped Marlin, 2 Blue Marlin, and 14 Tuna in two days! It was just awesome. Julio on the Tracy Ann brought in 4 of the Marlin and 12 Tuna -- he Rocks! And Roberto on the Rebecca brought in the rest of the catch. We released all the Marlin, but kept some of the Tuna”- it doesn’t get much better than that. Fishing was consistent most of the week but there were a couple of slower days, when about one third of the boats were “skunked” on the 3rd, 6th & 7th. At the start of the week Mike Junell from Southlake, Tx, fishing with friends aboard “Libre” caught both a blue and black marlin, both released and a tuna too (when it comes to fishing Texans are some of the luckiest people I know). Mark & Clayton Acker, also Texans and an enjoyable day aboard “Andrea” on the 4th, released a blue marlin and a sailfish, as well as boating five tunas. Overall Pisces anglers caught a total of thirty-nine billfish this week, breaking down into 17 stripes, 13 blues, 1 black and 7 sailfish – all but two fish were released.

OTHER SPECIES: Yellowfin tuna was the top sport fish in Cabo this week – we had over 200 in total, though most were school size fish, only occasionally getting up past 40 lbs. The tuna schools were spread out from Cabo to Punta Gorda anywhere from 10 to 40 miles offshore and took a combination of lures and bait. Dorado catches were about the same as last week – caught every day, but just the odd fish here and there, with weights around 25-30 lbs, though there was one 50 lb’er caught too. Just a couple of wahoo of average size were taken (40 lbs). Inshore action was slow.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Partly cloudy, air temps in the 90’s, seas moderate.

LOCATION: Cortez side from Cabo to Punta Gorda 10 to 40 miles out.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 80-82 F

BEST LURES: Live bait for striped marlin and sailfish, guacamaya and green combination lures for blues, dorado on lures, tuna bait and feathers.
