Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT

November 21TO TO 27TH, 2003

BILLFISH: Again a considerable improvement on fishing this week, with an eighty-six percent catch success rate for all species combined, which means just a few boats were “skunked” this week. Biggest fish this week was a 530 lb black marlin, caught aboard “Felina”, by Jeff Leitzinger from Los Angeles. The fish was caught at a spot known as the Honey Hole, close to Punta Gorda on a live tuna. This wasn’t the only big fish, we had a couple of blue marlin released, one a little over 200 lbs aboard “Karina” by James Livasy from Forsyth, IL, this one taken on a lure seven miles off of the Old Lighthouse. The other was aboard Marea, by Jim Smith from Pahrump, NV, nine miles off of Cabeza de Ballena. One unusual catch this week was a short-billed spearfish, caught by Douglas Long, from Yuba City, Ca, aboard “La Brisa” – this fish was released and weighed close to 60 lbs- no more than four a year of this type of fish are caught in Cabo waters, so thanks for the release Doug. Other nice catches were for Ed and Maile Soto from Wasilla AK, aboard “Karina” for three striped marlin released. Martin Estes and friends from Oregon had a triple marlin day too, aboard “Valerie” on the 26th, all released outside the Cerros de Arena. Fishing has concentrated more on the Pacific side, as is expected at this time of year and the outlook is for more striped marlin to start to appear. The catch success rate for billfish was fifty-four percent. Pisces anglers caught a total of 43 striped marlin, all but one released, two blue marlin, one black marlin, three sailfish and one spearfish all released. Below is an excerpt of a letter we received from an angler that fished aboard “Tracy Ann”, here is he text, which goes with the fabulous photo below – you can tell that the crew are thrilled to release this fish and it’s no wonder that they are rated among the top release crews in the world.” This crew’s good. The first day we wanted dorado and we had big dorado all over the deck. The next day we wanted tuna and we had to quit because we were whipped from catching so many! So our last day we wanted to try for marlin. We were trolling north with artificials and the baby sailfish hit. We took pictures and released it immediately. About an hour later a blue marlin hit the opposite rigger but we failed to hook up. Next was a dorado and that was it for the artificials. We then headed back south slow trolling live baits and a big striped marlin hit on one of the 20’s. We leadered the fish in fifteen minutes but wanted some better pictures, after thirty more minutes the fish was at the stern and we cut the leader. Three great days of fishing thanks to the crew of Tracy Ann! This was my fifth fishing trip to Cabo since 1967 and certainly the most memorable. We live in Dallas so it’s an easy trip by air. Thanks for the fun” Dr. Tony Brucks.

OTHER SPECIES: The most abundant fish in Cabo this week was yellowfin tuna resulting in a combined total of 109 for Pisces anglers, with thirty-four percent of charters hooking into tuna schools. Catches per boat were between one and twelve fish in the 30 to 60 lb class, with most fish found between the arch and lighthouse anywhere from three to thirty-five miles offshore. Dorado catches were quite a bit slower, with an overall catch success rate of twenty-eight percent for this species, with the average catch per boat, being one or two fish in the 20 to 35 lb class. A few wahoo this week, picked up whilst trolling, all around the 60 lb mark. We had on pilot shark released. Inshore lots of triggerfish and some sierra.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Beautiful! Clear, sunny skies, seas good, except on day that we had some whitecaps.

LOCATION: Cabeza de Ballena to Golden Gate, most popular spots were Cabeza de Ballena and the Old Lighthouse.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 77-78 F

BEST LURES: Live bait, green/orange, yellow/green.
