Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT
Nov. 29th to Dec. 4th, 2003
BILLFISH: Good numbers to report this week, mostly on striped marlin, with seventy one percent of our charters hooking up to this species. Nice thing too, is that the average weight is up, with fish in the 150 to 200 lb class being a regular occurrence. Stripers weren’t the only thing around either there are still some blues and sailfish. Though we didn’t mention them by name last week, mother Helen Long, with sons Doug and Dennis, as well as Martha Long fished aboard “La Brisa” and were thrilled to release three striped marlin, as well as a rare spearfish, a shark, dorado and several tuna. This week seemed to be a good one for the Brits here in Cabo we had several groups visiting and they weren’t disappointed; Dave Hygate & Charles Calder from Scotland were pleased to release three striped marlin, aboard “Adriana” on November 29th. Chris Wood & Wendy Halliwell from York, England also released three stripers this time aboard “Rebecca” on December 3rd. There were other triple headers too; on this day “Valerie” had three striped marlin for Teddy Baer, the well known charter skipper from the Florida Keys – Morris Palmer aboard “Tracy Ann” tallied three fish as well. As mentioned before there are still some blues around and Jason Vera Sr. & Jr. released an approximate 200 lb blue as well as a striper aboard “Andrea” on December 1st. As we close this report the World Billfish Series final championship is underway. This has been a bit hard on local crews, as the rules seem to be east coast style and they want to fish for our stripers with dead ballyhoo, as more points are achieved with dead baits (200 pts with dead bait 150 with live). This is a strictly release tournament and observers are aboard each boat. The striped marlin bit has been hot at both the Old Lighthouse and the Golden Gate, with the fish down deep right now, which should continue for a couple of weeks until they are up on the surface. Pisces anglers caught a total of sixty-three striped marlin this week, with all but one released, as well as one blue marlin released and two sailfish also released.
OTHER SPECIES: There wasn’t a whole lot happening apart from the marlin this week. There were a few lucky anglers that struck out offshore and managed to find some tuna, in the 30 to 45 lb class, with catches of up to a dozen fish, but overall less than ten percent of boats landed this species. Dorado catches were even slower, in fact we just had a couple of boats that caught them, with the best catch for Jerry Mako from New York, with seven fish around 30 lbs caught 15 miles off the Old Lighthouse aboard “La Brisa” on December 1st. Richard Wigley, (another Brit) from Jersey, fished “Andrea” on December 2nd and was pleased to release a striped marlin and catch eight tuna and two dorado. Inshore just a few skipjacks and sierra and not much, as well as fair amount of snapper and jack crevalle. Some roosters are now showing up too.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Couldn’t be better, clear blue skies and calm seas.
LOCATION: Pacific, Old Lighthouse and Golden Gate some tuna at the 22 spot.
BEST LURES: Mackerel, green/yellow lures, inshore sardines, rapalas.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 76 F
