Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT
DECEMBER 19TH TO 26TH, 2003
BILLFISH: A pretty good week here in Cabo with some excellent catches, but on the other hand quite a few boats getting “skunked”. Striped marlin were the most numerous species, with sixty-four percent of boats hooking up to between one and four per outing. We are also still catching late season blue marlin – “La Brisa” had a beautiful 500 lb blue marlin, for the Jansen family from Visalia, Ca. (Mark, Matt, Mike and Mark Jr.) on December 23rd. They were dragging a “petrolero” lure 21 miles off of Land’s End when the fish struck, taking two hours and fifteen minutes to bring to the boat, on 80 lb test. We usually see a 500 lb marlin the first week of January, marking the end of blue marlin season, so it appears it is early this year, as are the whales, which are already here in good numbers. This day proved to be the best of the week for us; “Ni Modo” released four striped marlin for the Hathaway party from Darien, CT and both “Adriana” and “Valerie” released three striped marlin each for the Wilson party from Atlanta and the Segovia party from Valencia, Ca. All of the fishing was on the Pacific between Land’s End and Golden Gate, with most action around the Old Lighthouse and Los Arcos region. Both bait and lures worked, but bait worked a little better. We even had one angler hook a dolphin (porpoise) on the 26th. Martin Turchin was aboard “La Brisa” fishing a school of tuna and had already boated two 35 lb fish, when they thought they’d got a really big one on, they did, it was about 120 lbs, the hapless dolphin crunched down on a lure and try as they might they couldn’t get it anywhere near the boat, not even with the crew trying to muscle it in. They ended up cutting the line as close to the mammal as they could, so if anyone finds a nice “guacaymaya” lure hanging off a dolphin; please return it to Pisces Fleet. Pisces anglers had an overall catch success rate of sixty-nine percent, quite low for this time of year, however, sixty-four percent of boats caught marlin. Our anglers released a total of thirty-nine striped marlin and landed one striped and one blue marlin.
OTHER SPECIES: Not a whole lot going on this week on smaller game, with dorado, after marlin, the most widely caught fish, however with just seventeen percent of charters catching the species, they obviously weren’t numerous. Weights on the dorado are up slightly at 30 to 35 lbs. Average catch was one, though occasionally some were luckier such as “Ruthless” on December 22nd, that had a run with eight boated on live bait at San Jaime. Yellow fin tuna was very slow, with just two for our fleet. Inshore sierra were out in force with pangas catching up to 15 in a morning. Lots of fun on light tackle.
LOCATION: Old Lighthouse to Golden Gate.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Beautiful, clear, sunny skies, some wind in the afternoons, calm to moderate seas.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 73 F
BEST LURES: Live bait.
