Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT FEBRUARY 20TH TO 26TH, 2004

BILLFISH: I wish we could say that the marlin fishing was as good this week, as it was for the same time in 2003 – when we had lots of anglers with quadruple marlin days, or more, but this year is quite different. That’s not to say fishing is not good, in fact our overall catch success rate, for all species combined was a very decent eighty-two percent; but the bulk of that percentage was in yellow-fin tuna. Just sixteen percent of charters were fortunate to hook up with a billfish. Marlin are in the area and we had quite a few reports of near misses and of fish getting off. But then again there are always some boats that get lucky; “Libre” on February 24th, managed to release three stripers as well as boating a couple of tuna for Henry McGuire and guests, 15 miles out from Land’s End. Dennis Epping and Tim Bushnell from Oregon fished with their sons, on two consecutive days and were lucky to score two striped marlin released, plus two 50 lb tuna on day one aboard “La Brisa” followed by two more stripers on day two aboard “Ni Modo”. All the marlin were caught on the Pacific side from Land’s End to San Jaime, live bait was the ticket but they were being pretty fussy eaters. Pisces anglers caught a total of eighteen striped marlin of which sixteen were released.

OTHER SPECIES: There was a lot of yellowfin tuna in Cabo this week and not the ho-hum football size either, fish this week averaged 30 to 70 lbs and several over the 100 lb mark were also taken. The tuna took a combination of live bait, lures, feathers and cedar plugs, with most action off of San Jaime and the Old Lighthouse. Over fifty-percent of boats caught yellowfin tuna with the average catch being three to five fish per boat; some such as “Andrea” totaled eleven big fish for Sharon Franklin and friends from Oklahoma. Dorado catches were slower, but still not bad, with thirty percent of charters getting one or two fish in the 15 to 35 lb class. We had a lot of big squid show up in the latter part of the week; as usual they were aggressive, hitting on lures, giving anglers an unusual catch, with some weighing up to 30 lbs. Just one wahoo for us this week at 45 lbs and inshore fair catches of sierra, snapper and cabrilla.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Mostly, clear, sunny skies, with a couple of really cold evenings. Seas calm to moderate.

LOCATION: The Pacific, Land’s End to San Jaime.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 69-73 F

BEST LURES: Live bait, cedar plugs, yellow/green, pink/blue.
