PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT
MARCH 5TH TO 11TH, 2004
BILLFISH: Well this section will be short this week, as we didn’t catch any marlin! A full moon on the night of the 6th, plus falling water temperatures and plentiful squid in the area, ended up giving us a zero catch rate on marlin this week. Overall for the Cabo fleet, no more than two or three were caught in any given day. We did have chances at striped marlin, but they tended to be widespread, with more found on the Cortez side than on the Pacific They were attracted to lures, but once bait was cast they lost interest, seeming to be already full on squid, which they prefer. This is actually quite typical in March –checking back to the past two years we find that things were similar for this same time. We also heard of an approximate, 150 lb swordfish being caught.
OTHER SPECIES: Whew, thank goodness for the tuna. There were plenty in the Cabo area this week. Seventy-five percent of boats were successful with yellow-fin this period. Catches ranged from one to thirty fish per boat, with weights ranging from 20 to 90 lbs. Adam Vinatieri, from the Patriots was here and fished aboard “Rebecca”; he had a great time, catching ten yellowfin from 20 to 60 lbs, on March 8th and fell in love with Cabo. Other notable catches were aboard “Andrea” this same day twenty-two fish for Koichiro Nakata and friends. On March 9th, “Rebecca” was again the lucky boat, scoring thirteen tuna from 40 to 90 lbs for Louis DeFreitas. The tuna were found over quite a wide ranging area, starting out at San Jaime, then switching to the Old Lighthouse, then off of Land’s End, but always a long way offshore between 10 and 40 miles, in less than perfect condition. Most of the tuna took regular marlin lures, blue/pink, black/red and orange colors seemed to be the most effective. Cedar plugs worked too, as did live bait for about twenty-five percent of the catches. Inshore lots of sierra for the pangas to catch, as well as snappers, amberjack, jack crevalle and roosterfish up to 20 lbs. Total on tuna for us was two hundred and fifty-seven.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Windy, sunny, but cool, seas nice until the wind picked up. If is blew the night before then we had rough seas the following day.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: Early in the week, temp was as high as 70 F and out in the Cortez, it edged up to 71, however, as we closed the week, water temp was no higher than 68 F and that was as far out as 26 miles. The water is blue, but cold.
BEST LURES: Blue/pink, black/red, orange/brown, and cedar plugs, and bait.
