PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT

MARCH 26TH TO APRIL 1ST, 2004



BILLFISH: We had really god fishing at the start of this period, though it did taper off somewhat towards the week’s close. Nevertheless, our overall catch success rate for all species combined was a respectable eighty seven percent, with thirty-five percent of charters catching striped marlin. Top marlin day was had by “Rebecca” on March 27th for Dee DeCamp, along with buddies Ralph and Jeff, from Peterson, Colorado, they were fortunate to release a marlin a piece eleven miles out from Palmilla, all on live bait. “La Brisa” fished a little further up the coast this day, at La Laguna and released a striper, but also did very well in landing two wahoo and two dorado., for Ben Blackman from Memphis, Tennessee. The 26th & 27th, turned out to be the best marlin days for us, with pretty much every boat catching at least one as well as small game. The weather was a big factor this week, as it ran hot and cold, one day it was sweltering, the next we were pulling out our sweaters, to fend off strong winds. Looking back to last year for this same time, we see that fishing was practically identical. There were very few anglers around this week, so not a lot of charters were going out; besides it was very changeable with water temperatures ranging from 64 to 72, currents running strong too, so one day we’d have warm water near Cabo the next it would drop by 8-10 degrees. The size on the stripers is pretty decent right now, average being 150 to 160 lbs. A few swordfish were sighted too, but none caught that we heard of. Pisces anglers caught a total of 16 striped marlin of which 14 were released.



OTHER SPECIES: Smaller game catches were good this week, with slightly more tuna than dorado, though fifty-one percent of charters caught one or both of these species. The last couple of days of this report, were boosted by schools of tuna being found 10 to 20 miles straight out from Land’s End, where boats averaged between two and six in the 20 to 40 lb class. Some boats that ventured a bit further out caught even more, topping out at around twenty fish. At the beginning of the week the boats did well on this species off of San Jose. Boats caught dorado on a regular basis but it was usually just a single large fish, 30 to 50 lbs, picked up whilst trolling, there were a few exceptions where boats landed five. There were a couple of days when quite a few wahoo were caught, one for every sixth boat or so; weights were larger than average at 60 to 80 lbs. Inshore sierra, skipjacks and the odd rooster.



LOCATION: Cortez side, Land’s End (Cerro Blanco) to San Jose.



WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear, sunny skies, some days extremely windy, causing rough seas, at the moment calm.



AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 66 – 72 F



BEST LURES: Live bait, cedar plugs, green/yellow lures.
