Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT APRIL 16TH TO 22ND, 2004

BILLFISH: A pretty nice week here in Cabo, anglers enjoying an overall catch success rate for all species combined of ninety-five percent. We didn’t catch a huge amount of billfish, but as we close this report we hear that the bite is really on, with some private boats reporting baiting up to ten stripers in a day and a lot of fleet boats reporting four to five strikes. We also heard of a very big blue marlin being caught, supposedly 730 lbs, which came into the main dock; as of yet we need to verify all the details, but this appears to be true. We had another swordfish this week, this time aboard “Libre” caught by Thomas McManmon from Marion, MA. – This was smaller than both taken last week, at 78 lbs. Michael Rothman, from Boca Raton, Fl, fishing with Rob Troyer from Omaha, Nebraska, were well pleased with their trip aboard “Tracy Ann”, releasing two striped marlin and also boating two yellowfin at 20 and 50 lbs respectively. “Karina” also had a respectable day for Brandon Boozer and Brad Brown from Texas, releasing two stripers and boating one yellowfin and one dorado. Twenty-five percent of charters caught striped marlin this week, but as mentioned above it looks like the striper bite is about to take off in a very positive way. Pisces anglers caught fifteen marlin this week and one swordfish of which twelve were released. Live bait is what worked best on the marlin and the hot spot seemed to be from the 95 spot to Chileno.

OTHER SPECIES: Tuna was king again this week, with sixty-nine percent of boats catching fish from 15 to 65 lbs. The nice thing this week, is that we saw a lot of anglers releasing the smaller fish, catches ranged from one to twenty-five per boat, with better catches in the earlier part of the week. There was no set area for tuna, they were found from the Old Lighthouse to San Jose. A disheartening sight, as we close this report, is that of five modern tuna seiners, a couple with fancy helicopters, right here in Cabo. Dorado catches were at about thirty-six percent for charters, up considerably, with fish ranging from 20 to 50 lbs. Almost exclusively, the catch would be a lone fish, that took a marlin lure. The amount of wahoo caught was very exciting, with eleven percent of charters catching this tasty species. Weights were good, getting up to 80 lbs, but averaging closer to 65 lbs. Some boats had double headers – with the inner Gordo, being very productive – however, there are fears that the wahoo could end up as seiner by catch. We’ll keep a close eye on this and keep you informed. A 100 lb mako shark was caught by Barbara Davis aboard “Andrea” on April 20th. Inshore the sierra were hot, with more caught of these by pangas, than anything else. There were also fair amounts of yellowtail up to 25 lbs and lots of skipjacks, as well as a few jack crevalle and the odd rooster here and there.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Windy most of the week, resulting in moderate seas, skies mostly sunny, cold in the evenings.

LOCATION:25- 30 miles off of the Old Lighthouse, 23 miles off of San Jose, 24 miles off of Chileno,95 Spot, San Jaime, Cabo Real, Palmilla 15 miles, Santa Maria, 8 miles out from Land’s End – in other words all over the place.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 71-72 F

BEST LURES: Live bait, cedar plugs, blue/white feathers, yellow/green.
