Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT APRIL 23RD TO 29TH, 2004

BILLFISH: Fishing is great in Cabo right now, lots of striped marlin as well as dorado, wahoo and tuna. First up, a lot of people are asking about the big fish caught last week. Although we didn’t see a picture, we found that the fish weighed 760 lbs and was caught by Stanley Cohen from San Diego aboard Anamar II, off of the Cabrilla sea mount. Taken on 80 lb test the fish took a petrolero lure. The week started out with a bang, with boats catching two and three striped marlin, two to eight miles offshore between Santa Maria and Palmilla. John Macmillan, Ray Messiel and Tom Vatter, all from Florida, were some of the lucky anglers that had a triple header day, aboard “Tracy Ann” on April 24th. Not be outdone, “Valerie” followed up with three of her own the next day for Gary & Susan Hall, from Snohomish, Wa, who then had a repeat day on the 26th, six marlin in two days isn’t bad. Most boats caught one or two striped marlin, plus a dorado or tuna and if lucky a nice wahoo. Fishing was close all week, with the last day of this report boats fishing as close as two miles to shore in the Redhill region. Weather cooperated aiding this catches, with sunny skies and mostly flat seas, despite large swells onshore. Live bait was the ticket – boats could bait up to ten fish in a day, but not all were takers. Our overall success catch rate for all species combined was eighty-four percent, with sixty-four percent of charters catching marlin. Those they didn’t were looking for tuna, up on the Pacific, or were simply unlucky in registering solid hook-ups. Everybody at least saw fish. Pisces anglers caught a total of ninety-two striped marlin this week of which eighty-nine were released.

OTHER SPECIES: Dorado and tuna catches were almost on a par this period, with slightly more tuna than dorado, with twenty-two percent of boats catching dorado and twenty-four tuna. We had a spectacular tuna on April 29th, aboard “Valerie” for Ray Oreswski from Baden, Pa – Ray’s fish was a back-breaking 250 lbs, he then went on to release a striped marlin and release five other smaller tuna and a couple of dorado. Other tuna catches were from two to eighteen fish in the football size, 15 to 35 lbs. Dorado catches were usually that of a lone fish, though occasionally some boats did get four or five, weights were fair at 15 to 40 lbs. Some nice wahoo catches this week, with the largest a 90 lb’er aboard “Ni Modo”, other fish were between 60 and 70 lbs. Inshore mostly sierra, some yellowtail and skipjacks.

LOCATION: Santa Maria to Palmilla, two to eight miles offshore. San Jaime a couple of days for tuna.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear sunny skies, breezy on the Pacific, calm seas.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 73 -74 F

BEST LURES: Live bait for marlin on the surface, petroleros.
