Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report
PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT
NOVEMBER 20TH TO 25TH, 2004
BILLFISH: Fishing this week in Cabo was rather on the inconsistent side. That is most days were pretty good, but we also had a couple of colder days when fishing was poor. On the slower days, quite a few boats were “skunked” or just got a token dorado or two. Nevertheless, the overall catch success rate for all species combined was very good at eighty-nine percent. On warmer days, such as November 25th, Thanksgiving, Thomas Sonneberg from Lake Hopatcong, N.J, had a lot to be thankful for. He was fishing aboard “Tracy Ann” and was extremely lucky to get two short-bill spearfish strikes at San Jaime, one came off but the other, was successfully released. It was estimated at 50 lbs and took a green and white lure. This wasn’t all, Thomas also released a striped marlin and along with friends boated five yellowfin tuna. These are the fist spearfish that we’ve heard of in around three years. Gerald Richmond, from Las Vegas, was out this same day aboard “Andrea” and also did very well in releasing four striped marlin, 15 miles off of the Old Lighthouse; three on lures and one on live bait. At the start of the week Art and Anthony Aquaviva from New Jersey had four striped marlin aboard “Valerie” at Los Arcos, these fish were all caught on the bottom with weighted, live baits. This is a phenomenon, we believe to be exclusive to Cabo, when for a few weeks of the year you can bottom fish for marlin. Phillip Keogh from Huddersfield and Tony Vancootan from Buckhurst Hill, Essex – both are in England, were thrilled to finish up their ten day trip to Mexico with a triple header on striped marlin aboard “Adriana” on November 20th, all three fish were released, way to go guys! Our catch success rate for marlin this week was forty-one percent, this may drop off slightly around full moon, but then we should see it come back and climb as we expect an influx of stripers anytime now. Pisces anglers caught a total of 40 striped marlin and one spearfish. All were released.
OTHER SPECIES: Dorado were the most widely caught gamefish in Cabo this week, with fifty percent of charters landing fish in the 10 to 30 lb class. Dorado were again found over a widespread area, mostly taking lures and caught in one’s and two’s some boats were the exception and caught up to six. Yellowfin tuna catches were on the slow side with eighteen percent of boats finding school size fish, of 15 to 35 lbs. Average catch was two to five fish, some exceptions were “Ruthless” on November 25th, that had thirteen 30 miles off of Moro Prieto.
WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear, sunny skies, some cloud cover early in the morning, (giving us spectacular sunrises), a couple of windy days caused rough seas, but now calm. Nighttime temps are around 72 F daytime around 83 F.
LOCATION: Los Arcos, Old Lighthouse, Golden Gate, San Jaime.
AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 76-77 F
BEST LURES: Live bait, green/yellow, blue/white, assorted.
