Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT APRIL 28TH TO MAY 5TH, 2005\

BILLFISH: Fishing wasn’t exactly like we wanted it to be this week; after such splendid catches last report we hoped it would just take off. This was not the case however, as cold winds blowing in from the Pacific cooled the area and brought us back to April type weather and a slow down on fishing. Overall seventy-percent of our charters caught fish this week, of those, sixty percent of the catches were marlin, which still bodes well for the Rolex tournament set to start on May 16th. Once the hot weather stays turned on, the fishing will explode. We still had some good catches this week though and “Ni Modo” was the hot item, having two quadruple marlin days, on April 29th for Bret Casey and friends, the other on May 5th for Jaime and Jimmie Einbund from Newhall & Saugus, California, respectively – both days Ni Modo, fished a ways up the Sea of Cortez just past San Jose and also at Destiladeres. Susan Hall fishing with husband Gary aboard Halcon was thrilled to release her biggest striper to date a 160 lb’er also on May 5th. The start of this week was the slowest for us, but as we close this report fishing seems to be more consistent, with the last day, producing at least one marlin per boat and occasionally a dorado or yellowfin. Live bait was what worked best and boats stayed on the Cortez side from Chileno to Destialderes. Pisces anglers caught a total of seventy striped marlin this week of which sixty-six were released along with a sailfish.

OTHER SPECIES: Not a lot going on with smaller game with just a handful of dorado being caught, usually random hooks ups, whilst trolling for marlin. Some were of a decent size at forty pounds plus. Yellowfin tuna were not much better with just twenty total caught for our fleet. Again they were odd catches here and there, though at the close of the report, some small schools were found of football size fish around Chileno. Very few wahoo. The pangas had a tough time at the beginning of the week with not much being caught except a few skipjack, but as the week progressed there was a run on sierra near the old lighthouse with some fish going over 10 lbs.

LOCATION: Chileno to Destiladeres on the Cortez side.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear, sunny skies, fair on the Cortez, on the rough side on the Pacific.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 67-70 F

BEST LURES: Live bait.
