Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT September 23rd to 29th, 2005

BILLFISH: Fishing was good this week, proved by an overall catch success rate of eighty-two percent for all species combined, but there is still room for improvement. We didn’t see as many multiple billfish days as last week and several boats were “skunked”, however there were still some vessels that did very well, or were just in the right place at the right time, resulting in a forty-eight percent catch success rate. Top boat this week was “Sundancer”, at the close of our report, as Hurricane Otis, began it’s path towards the Baja coast; captain Martin reported beautiful weather up at the Golden Gate on the Pacific where he caught and released two blue marlin, as well as a striped marlin (all released) as well as boating a couple of tuna in the 40 to 60 lb class, for Joe Carnivale and friends. Earlier in the week “Ruthless” did well for Dan & Barley Jones from Soyarmouth, Ma, releasing two sailfish and one striped marlin 14 miles off of Cerro Colorado. “Rebecca” also did well this day with two striped marlin and a blue marlin for Michael and Matthew Brady, fishing with Jim Gonber, all from Ohio. For most of the week it was very hard to get bait, but the situation improved at the end of the week. The fishing this week could be described as average – we could have done with more blue marlin. The best locations were the 95 and 11.50 spots, offshore 5 to 20 miles. Pisces anglers caught a total of 49 billfish, consisting of 28 striped marlin, 14 sailfish and 7 blue marlin, all but three fish were released.

OTHER SPECIES: Dorado catches were again good with forty-one percent of boats hooking fish in the 10 to 35 lb class, catches were usually just one or two fish, though we did have a couple of boats closer to shore that got seven. Tuna catches were much slower, with just twelve percent of charters hooking up to mostly football size fish. On the 25th “Marlin Too” was fortunate to land seven in the 40-50 lb class 23 mils off of Faro Molino. On the 28th, “Tracy Ann” caught ten tuna, with four smaller fish released and six boated between 38 and 90 lbs. We did have quite a few wahoo this week, but they didn’t account for but eight percent of catches but sizes were not bad at 40 to 60 lbs. Inshore not much other that skipjacks.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Skies mostly clear, seas calm, turning cloudy and a little rough at the close of this report.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 82 F BEST LURES: Live bait, red/brown, petrolero, green/orange.
