Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT JANUARY 27TH TO FEBRUARY 2nd, 2006

BILLFISH: It seems as if our season is ahead of itself as we experienced mixed fishing this week reminiscent of March. The Golden Gate area was still a reliable marlin source, but getting them to eat was harder, requiring a lot of patience on the part of the anglers. Those anglers that couldn’t wait it out headed inshore to the San Cristobal area for red snapper. The striped marlin bite was up and down with live bait working best. Some boats tried closer to shore and got hits on lures, but no takers. Some boats did exceptionally well despite the slimmer pickings this week, Hap Burnett from Lake Havasu, Arizona fished aboard “Ni Modo” on January 30th and was our angler of the week for releasing six striped marlin and catching ten red snapper. This same day “Rebecca” had three striped marlin, nine red snapper and four sierra for Ray Boad and Steve Johnson from Washington. Next day out “Ni Modo” was the hot boat again with four striped marlin released and ten red snapper for Jim Bennett and Carter Sewart from Billings Montana. Our overall catch success rate for all species combined was a respectable ninety percent, with fifty –five percent of charters catching striped marlin. Pisces anglers caught a total of fifty striped marlin of which all but one were released.

OTHER SPECIES: After marlin, red snapper were the most abundant gamefish caught in Cabo, with fifty one percent of charters catching fish from 15 to 40 lbs. The captains enjoyed this as well as the anglers, as they know the season on this fish is short, in such good numbers. Boats caught anywhere from two to ten fish, with nearly all taking live bait, in the San Cristobal area. Dorado fishing was poor – we only caught two smallish fish this week. Tuna was even slower, with just one fish, which at least was a decent size at 70 lbs, caught aboard “Sundancer” by Craig DeVito. Inshore there were lots of sierra, some skipjack and yellowtail. We also had one wahoo and a mako shark.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear sunny skies, warm days, seas moderate.

LOCATION: Golden gate, San Cristobal and lighthouse.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 69-70 F

BEST LURES: Live bait Based on the catches of Pisces by Tracy Ehrenberg
